introduction: in iran, thousands of young individuals become victims of head injury annually. head injury can damage neuronal cells which may in turn complicate the recovery of the patients. also, the increase of iron in cerebrospinal fluid (csf) following head injury may contribute to the hypoxic-ischemia brain damage by catalyzing the formation of free radicals (harber-weiss rection). the obj...

Enteric pathogens, such as enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) O157:H7, encounter varying concentrations of iron during their life cycle. In the gastrointestinal tract, the amount of available free iron is limited because of absorption by host factors. EHEC and other enteric pathogens have developed sophisticated iron-responsive systems to utilize limited iron resources, and these systems are prim...

Diiron enneacarbonyl, colloidal iron particles used for removing monocytes, enhanced the 3H-thymidine uptake into the mitogen-stimulated human lymphocytes in serum-free medium, whereas neither silica particles, latex particles, carbonyl iron powder nor iron pentacarbonyl did. Because monocytes had no influence on the enhancing effect or diiron enneacarbonyl did not bind to PHA, it was suggested...

The ability of transferrin to potentiate oxygen free radical-mediated endothelial cell injury was assessed. 51Cr-labeled endothelial cells derived from rat pulmonary arteries (RPAECs) were incubated with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in the presence and absence of holosaturated human transferrin, and the effect of transferrin on H2O2-mediated endothelial cell toxicity was determined. Addition of hol...

Iron oxide (Fe2O3) nanoparticles were synthesized by a simple approach using sodium borohydride (NaBH4) and Iron chloride hexahydrate (FeCl3.6H2O). Their physicochemical properties were characterized by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). XRD pattern showed that the iron...

INTRODUCTION Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC), the causative agent of over 85% of urinary tract infections (UTIs), elaborate a number of siderophores to chelate iron from the host. On the other hand, the host immune imperative is to limit the availability of iron to the bacteria. Little is known regarding the mechanisms underlying this host-iron-UPEC interaction. Our objective was to deter...

We define Frobenius and Verschiebung operations on the A-theoretic nil-terms NA ± (X) for a space X in three different ways. Two applications are included. Firstly, we obtain that the homotopy groups of NA ± (X) are either trivial or not finitely generated as abelian groups. Secondly, the Verschiebung defines a Z[N×]-module structure on the homotopy groups of NA ± (X), with N× the multiplicativ...

This study demonstrated that the bacteria could adsorb Fe(3+) and reduce Fe(3+) to Fe(2+). Iron had significant bacteriostatic effects, which were directly proportional to the iron concentration and under the influence of pH and chelator. It presumed that the inhibition of Fe(3+) acts through the formation of hydroxyl free radicals.
