The Vitek 2 yeast susceptibility test was evaluated by testing 122 Candida isolates against fluconazole and voriconazole. Excellent categorical agreement with the CLSI broth microdilution method was observed (97.5% for both the azoles). Moreover, the Vitek 2 system was able to identify all but 2 of 59 investigated fluconazole-resistant organisms.
CONTEXT Esophageal candidiasis is often observed in patients with risk factors for its development and fluconazole is the therapeutic choice for the treatment of this disease. OBJECTIVES To determine its frequency, by performing upper digestive endoscopy; to determine Candida species involved in its pathogenesis and verify their distribution according with the predisposing factors and to dete...
OBJECTIVES To define the antifungal susceptibility patterns of the most common non-albicans Candida spp. in China. METHODS We evaluated the susceptibilities to nine antifungal drugs of Candida parapsilosis species complex, Candida tropicalis, Candida glabrata species complex and Candida krusei isolates from patients with invasive candidiasis at 11 hospitals over 3 years. Isolates were identif...
Nine selected isolates of Candida albicans were tested for their susceptibilities to amphotericin B and fluconazole by using three methods to assess the effect of incubation time and buffer concentration. By using a microdilution method with 0.0165 M 3-(N-morpholino)propanesulfonic acid (MOPS) and a 24-h incubation time, all of the isolates were found to be susceptible to amphotericin B and flu...
background candiduria is one of the most common symptoms of urinary tract infections caused by several species of candida spp. several antifungals are available to treat such candidal infections. during the last decades, resistance to antifungal especially to non-albicans species has increased. objectives the present study aimed to evaluate the susceptibility to antifungal drugs of candida spec...
Background: Vaginal candidiasis is a common cause of vaginal infections. Currently, for treatment of these infections, fluconazole is prescribed more than other drugs; so determining the drug resistance of Candida to fluconazole and comparing it with itraconazole as a substitute has been one of the main objectives of this study. Materials and methods: Of 180 patients with symptoms of vaginal c...
Background & objectives: Fungal infections are increasing very rapidly. Candida is a major pathogen involved and constitutes a part of normal microflora of humans. This organism is a leading agent associated with blood stream infections. The present study involves phenotypic characterization of Candida isolates. The isolates were obtained from National Culture Collection of Pathogenic Fungi at ...
We evaluated the NCCLS M44-P fluconazole disk diffusion method in comparison with the NCCLS M27-A2 broth microdilution method for determining the susceptibility of 276 isolates of Cryptococcus neoformans. Disk diffusion testing was performed using Mueller-Hinton agar supplemented with 2% glucose and 0.5 microg of methylene blue/ml. Among the 276 isolates, 259 (93.8%) were susceptible, 16 (5.8%)...
Candida dubliniensis is a recently identified yeast species primarily associated with oral carriage and infection in individuals infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. The species can be divided into at least four genotypes on the basis of the nucleotide sequence of the internal transcribed spacer region of the rRNA operon. Previous studies have shown that a small number of clinical is...
One hundred and forty-one Candida species isolated from clinical specimens of hospitalized patients in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during 2002 to 2007, were analized in order to evaluate the distribution and susceptibility of these species to fluconazole. Candida albicans was the most frequent species (45.4%), followed by C. parapsilosis sensu lato (28.4%), C. tropicalis (14.2%), C. guilliermondii ...
