As speed & bandwidth has always been a cause of concern in communication network, WDM emerges as a vital solution to these problems. The problem arises when the demand for bandwidth in a fiber optic network exceeds the current capacity, WDM helps in expanding the capacity of a fiber optic network without requiring additional fiber. The decision problem is to find the most cost-effective combina...

We evaluate the benefit of reconfiguration after single-link failures in supporting recovery from additional failures. We also develop an intuitive classification of two-link failures to help understand the impact of failures. c 2003 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (060.4250) Fiber optics and optical communications/networks; (060.4510) Fiber optics and optical communications/optical comm...

he drive to include more and more processors and I/O devices in parallel processor complexes has created a need for box-to-box interconnection links capable of delivering bandwidth comparable to system backplanes. Point-to-point links overcome the speed and cost constraints of shared buses. However, copper-based point-to-point links can reliably carry high-speed data only a limited distance. Pa...

We propose and experimentally demonstrate the feasibility of an integrated hybrid optical fiber sensing interrogation technique that efficiently combines distributed Raman-based temperature sensing with fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based dynamic strain measurements. The proposed sensing system is highly integrated, making use of a common optical source/receiver block and exploiting the advantages ...

Instrumentation for stroboscopic time-resolved diffraction studies at low temperatures is described. Exciting laser light is delivered to the crystal through an optical fiber. During the diffraction experiment, fluorescence from the sample is focused onto a fiber optic bundle surrounding the laser-light fiber, and monitored by a photodiode. A rotating slotted disk produces a pulsed X-ray beam w...

A fiber optic conveyor has been developed for investigating the travel-time difference between two counter-propagating light beams in uniformly moving fiber. Our finding is that there is a travel-time difference Δt = 2vΔl/c in a fiber segment of length Δl moving with the source and detector at a speed v, whether the segment is moving uniformly or circularly.

This paper demonstrates the utility of a noninvasive backscatter fiber optic probe for dynamic light-scattering characterization of a microemulsion comprising sodium dodecyl sulfate/1-butanol/ brine/heptane. The fiber probe, comprising two optical fibers precisely positioned in a stainless steel body, is a miniaturized and efficient self-beating dynamic light-scattering system. Accuracy of part...
