Infants born preterm are at high risk for the onset of cognitive dysfunctions at school age. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between early neurodevelopmental assessment and the risk of adverse cognitive outcome in extremely low birth weight children. We enrolled all newborns (January 2002 - April 2007) consecutively admitted to our Institution, with a birthweight < 1000...

The authors examined trends in preterm birth and its determinants by using the US birth and infant death files for 1989-1997. The impact of trends in preterm birth rates on neonatal and infant mortality was also evaluated. Among Whites, preterm births (<37 completed weeks of gestation) increased from 8....

Thirty-one consecutive infants <1000 g at birth were intubated according to Tochen's rule; placement was verified/modified after auscultation and by radiology. Depth measurements were by caliper and radiology. Tochen's rule alone would lead to inadequate tube placement in 47% of infants. Auscultation allows adequate placement in only three-fourths of patients.

OBJECTIVE To compare biobehavioral responses to acute pain at 4 months' corrected age between former extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants and term-born controls. METHODOLOGY Measures of facial behavioral and cardiac autonomic reactivity in 21 former ELBW infants (mean birth weight = 763 g) were compared with term-born infants (n = 24) during baseline, lance, and recovery periods of a fin...

The Miller Assessment for Preschoolers (MAP) was used to provide an overall profile of 32 ELBW children and 55 control children at 5 years of age. The resul...

METHODS Subjects were born in the state of Victoria during 1991-92 and comprised 224 of 241 consecutive survivors with a birth weight of 500-999 g, and 223 of 262 normal birt...
