OBJECTIVES Drug dependence as a chronic disorder is reversible over time and has a cost burden for individuals, families, and society. An individual who has stopped taking drugs for a long time may start taking drugs again. The variables affecting the reuse of drugs are not well known. Therefore a study of the factors that increase the length of time away from drugs is essential. METHODS This...
The concept of intermediate tail dependence is useful if one wants to quantify the degree of positive dependence in the tails when there is no strong evidence of presence of the usual tail dependence. We first review existing studies on intermediate tail dependence, and then we report new results to supplement the review. Intermediate tail dependence for elliptical, extreme value and Archimedea...
In this work we present a simple estimation procedure for a general frailty model for analysis of prospective correlated failure times. Earlier work showed this method to perform well in a simulation study. Here we provide rigorous large-sample theory for the proposed estimators of both the regression coefficient vector and the dependence parameter, including consistent variance estimators.
To account for the correlation between failure and censoring, we propose a new frailty model for clustered data. In this model, the risk to be censored is affected by the risk of failure. This model allows flexibility in the direction and degree of dependence between failure and censoring. It includes the traditional frailty model as a special case. It allows censoring by some causes to be anal...
Multi-type recurrent event data occur frequently in longitudinal studies. Dependent termination may occur when the terminal time is correlated to recurrent event times. In this article, we simultaneously model the multi-type recurrent events and a dependent terminal event, both with nonparametric covariate functions modeled by B-splines. We develop a Bayesian multivariate frailty model to accou...
Multi-type recurrent events are often encountered in medical applications when two or more different event types could repeatedly occur over an observation period. For example, patients may experience recurrences of multi-type nonmelanoma skin cancers a clinical trial for cancer prevention. The aims those to characterize features the marginal processes, evaluate covariate effects, and quantify ...
Recurrent event data is a special type of multivariate survival data. Dynamic and frailty models are one of the approaches that dealt with this kind of data. A comparison between these two models is studied using the empirical standard deviation of the standardized martingale residual processes as a way of assessing the fit of the two models based on the Aalen additive regression model. Here we...
In smoking cessation clinical trials, subjects commonly experience a series of lapse and recovery episodes of varying lengths. Any quit episode may become permanent, in the sense that the subject stops smoking for good, and any lapse may also become permanent, in the sense that the subject abandons the quit attempt entirely. Individual quit patterns may reflect the effects of treatment and meas...
OBJECTIVES Population ageing may result in increased comorbidity, functional dependence and poor quality of life. Mechanisms and pathophysiology underlying frailty have not been fully elucidated, thus absolute consensus on an operational definition for frailty is lacking. Frailty scores in the acute medical care setting have poor predictive power for clinically relevant outcomes. We explore the...
