We examine the near-IR light-matter interaction for graphene integrated cavity ring resonators based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) race-track waveguides. Fitting of the cavity resonances from quasi-TE mode transmission spectra reveal the real part of the effective refractive index for graphene, n(eff) = 2.23 ± 0.02 and linear absorption coefficient, α(gTE) = 0.11 ± 0.01dBμm(-1). The evanescent ...

We develop novel designs enabling slow-light propagation with vanishing group-velocity dispersion ("frozen light") and slow-light with large delay-bandwidth product, in periodic nanowires. Our design is based on symmetry-breaking of periodic nanowire waveguides and we demonstrate its vailidy through two- and three-dimensional simulations. The slow-light is associated with a stationary inflectio...

We present numerical experiments showing how coupled-mode theory can be systematically applied to join very dissimilar photonic crystal waveguides with 100% transmission. Our approach relies on appropriately tuning the coupling of the evanescent tail of a cavity mode to each waveguide. The transition region between the waveguides may be as short as a few lattice spacings. Moreover, this techniq...

Among the various sensing principles proposed for bioaffinity studies, optical evanescent wave techniques have gained the lead in popularity. Next to evanescent ellipsometry [1] and the various optical waveguide platforms [2,3], surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy [4–6], in particular, has found widespread applications and has demonstrated its potential for the sensitive detection of b...

Development of efficient and sensitive motion transducers for arrays of nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) is important for fundamental research as well as for technological applications. Here, we report a single-wire nanomechanical transducer interface, which relies upon near-field optomechanical interactions. This multiplexed transducer interface comes in the form of a single-mode fiber tap...

Abstract An isotropic three-dimentional perfect lens based on cubic meshes of interconnected transmission lines and bulk loads is proposed. The lens is formed by a slab of a loaded mesh placed in between two similar unloaded meshes. The dispersion equations and the characteristic impedances of the eigenwaves in the meshes are derived analytically, with an emphasis on generality. This allows des...

This paper presents a frequency reconfigurable evanescent-mode cavity-backed slot antenna (ECBSA) with wide tuning range, high-power handling capability, and simplified manufacturing. The mechanism consists of external long-range linear actuators contactless tuner disc to vary the capacitive loading an cavity. antenna’s operating is tuned by changing cavity’s critical gap size. Radiation occurs...

We reveal that the overall evanescent wave (EW) power captured by an unclad multimode fiber employed in a sensing configuration is determined by the tunneling modes, not the guided modes. While enormous in strength, most of this power is inaccessible using traditional EW power enhancers. However, we found that by roughening the fiber end face, this supposedly lost power can be recaptured and th...
