Benzotetramisole promotes the catalytic asymmetric [2,3]-rearrangement of allylic quaternary ammonium salts (either isolated or prepared in situ from p-nitrophenyl bromoacetate and the corresponding allylic amine), generating syn-α-amino acid derivatives with excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivity (up to >95:5 dr; up to >99% ee).

The title compound, C(12)H(14)N(2)O(3), was synthesized as an inter-mediate for the synthesis of metamitron. The benzene ring forms dihedral angles of 86.3 (2) and 10.0 (3)° with the ethyl group and the acetyl-imino plane, respectively. The crystal structure involves inter-molecular C-H⋯O and N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

The methine C atom of the triphenyl-methyl group in the title compound, C(28)H(23)IO(2)S, is slightly flattened out [ΣC(phen-yl)-C-C(phen-yl) = 335.6 (5)°]. The -C-O-C-C-S- chain connecting the triphenyl-methyl group and the aromatic ring adopts an extended zigzag conformation, these five atoms lying on an approximate plane (r.m.s. deviation = 0.120 Å).
