Entamoeba histolytica, a microaerophilic protozoan parasite, possesses mitosomes. Mitosomes are mitochondrion-related organelles that have largely lost typical mitochondrial functions, such as those involved in the tricarboxylic acid cycle and oxidative phosphorylation. The biological roles of Entamoeba mitosomes have been a long-standing enigma. We previously demonstrated that sulfate activati...
The purpose of the study was to obtain more reliable epidemiological data concerning Entamoeba (E.) histolytica infection in Tunisian food handlers using established molecular tools able to differentiate E. histolytica from E. dispar. From 2002 to 2005, 4,266 fresh stools specimens received in the setting of the National program of food handlers' control were analysed by optical microscopy. Twe...
BACKGROUND Entamoeba histolytica infection is found almost all over the world and is highly endemic and a major cause of parasitic diarrhoea particularly in the developing countries. METHODS A systemic surveillance was set up at the Infectious Disease hospital, Kolkata, India between November 2007 and October 2009 for understanding the trend of E. histolytica infection in Kolkata. Fecal sampl...

background: diseases and tumors of the appendix vermiformis are very rare, except acute appendicitis. objectives: this retrospective study was conducted to document the unusual findings in appendectomy specimens. patients and methods: data of 1466 adult patients were gathered retrospectively. appendectomy was performed in 1169 and in 297 patients following a diagnosis of acute appendicitis and ...
PRELIMINARY COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ENTAMOEBA HISTOLYTICA AND ENTAMOEBA DISPAR BY PCR TECHNIQUE IN IRAN
It has been suggested that two distinct species exist within what was originally known as Entamoeba histolytica and E. dispar. These are Entamoeba dispar for the nonpathogenic and E. histolytica for the pathogenic fonn. Differentiation of these two organisms is of great clinical importance since they are morphologically indistinguishable and both fonns can infect the human intestinal cavity...
Aim: Amebiasis is a disease caused by protozoon Entamoeba histolytica, that results in amoebic dysentery. While intestinal parasites are the third leading cause of death, especially developing countries, it has been global concern. Bibliometric methods have used parasitology discipline for more than 30 years, however there not any bibliometric study on ameb...
Homosexual persons or human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients frequently excrete cysts of nonpathogenic strains of Entamoeba histolytica ("Entamoeba dispar"). However, invasive amoebiasis is rare. We report two patients with AIDS and cytomegalovirus colitis in whom invasive amoebiasis was histologically diagnosed. It is concluded that E. histolytica has to be considered in HIV-infe...
Entamoeba dispar, a common noninvasive parasite, is indistinguishable in its cysts and trophozoite forms from Entamoeba histolytica, the cause of invasive amebiasis, by microscopy. To differentiate the two species seems to be a problem for laboratory diagnosis. Recent experimental studies showed that E. dispar can be considered pathogenic too. We present a rare case of enteritis due to E. dispar.
