background: we examined a molecular method with a single-pcr for amplification of a part of cp5 gene enabling us to differentiate the pathogenic species, entamoeba histolytica , from the non-pathogenic species, e. dispar . methods: we developed a single pcr method for this purpose.  after investigation of genbank, primer pairs were designed from highly conserved regions of cysteine proteinase...

Our current taxonomic perspective on Entamoeba is largely based on small-subunit ribosomal RNA genes (SSU rDNA) from Entamoeba species identified in vertebrate hosts with minor exceptions such as E. moshkovskii from sewage water and E. marina from marine sediment. Other Entamoeba species have also been morphologically identified and described from non-vertebrate species such as insects; however...

Amoebiasis is a common and life-threatening disease. The discrimination of the pathogenic Entamoeba histolytica from the non-pathogenic Entamoeba dispar could be done by advanced methods such as enzyme immunoassay (EIA) and PCR. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of amoebiasis in Izmir province, and differentiate the Entamoeba species by PCR and EIA. Stool samples of 2,047 ...

Entamoeba histolytica, the parasitic amoeba responsible for amoebiasis, causes approximately 100,000 deaths every year. There is currently no vaccine against this parasite. We have previously shown that intracecal inoculation of E. histolytica trophozoites leads to chronic and non-healing cecitis in mice. Entamoeba moshkovskii, a closely related amoeba, also causes diarrhea and other intestinal...

UNLABELLED Amoebiasis is an infection caused by Entamoeba histolytica and is a potential health risk in countries in which health barriers are inappropriate. Since the discovery of Entamoeba dispar, the prevalence of amoebiasis has been modified. OBJECTIVE This study has standardized the PCR technique applied for the diagnosis of different species of the E. histolytica/E. dispar complex and h...

BACKGROUND Differentiation between Entamoeba histolytica and Entamoeba dispar is very important for both clinical therapy and epidemiological studies. Although these two species are morphologically identical, they have differences in genetic, chemical specifications and pathogenicity. This study was carried out to differentiate E. histolytica from E. dispar and also to find out frequency of the...

PCR as a tool for intestinal parasite diagnosis is expanding since differentiation between Entamoeba histolytica and Entamoeba dispar cysts is impossible with microscopy. Since pre-analytical factors influence DNA detection, we evaluated with real-time PCR the influence of storage time and temperature. We demonstrated an improved DNA detection in frozen stool samples.

Homosexual persons or human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients frequently excrete cysts of nonpathogenic strains of Entamoeba histolytica ("Entamoeba dispar"). However, invasive amoebiasis is rare. We report two patients with AIDS and cytomegalovirus colitis in whom invasive amoebiasis was histologically diagnosed. It is concluded that E. histolytica has to be considered in HIV-infe...
