A 60-year-old male patient was evaluated for cervical pain, hiccups, dysphonia and dysphagia for five months. Physical examination showed left IX and X cranial nerve palsy. Brain MRI was normal. A cervical CT scan showed an elongated styloid process and stylohyoid ligament pseudoarthrosis (Figure). Eagle’s syndrome is a rare entity caused by abnormal enlargement and ossification of the styloid ...
UNLABELLED INTRODUCTION Eagle syndrome is a condition characterized by an elongated (>3cm) styloid process with associated symptoms of recurrent facial or throat pain. In this report we present a case of Eagle syndrome exhibiting the typical findings of glossopharyngeal nerve involvement, as well as unusual involvement of the trigeminal nerve. Notably, this patient developed a classical trig...
Elongation of the styloid process or stylohyoid ligament calcification is a well recognized finding of dental prac-tice, and an incidence of 4 to 30 percent has been reported on radiographs. Rarely, complete mineralization of the stylohyoid ligament or elongation of styloid process has been associated with difficulties in intubation and significant clinical symptoms, which is termed Eagle's syn...
Eagle's syndrome is characterized by an elongated styloid process and (or) calcification of stylohyoid ligament besides clinical symptoms. The symptoms are those related to pain when swallowing or rotating the neck, headacke, earache, dizziness, intermittent glossitis, sensation of foreign body in pharynx and transient syncope. The case which is presented can be considered a very rare form of t...
Eagle syndrome is caused by an elongated styloid process or calcified stylohyoid ligament. The stylocarotid variant with neurologic symptoms is rare and presents a diagnostic challenge. Patients may present with transient ischemic attacks, syncope, or less well defined symptoms like episodic dizziness. We report use of vascular laboratory testing in the management of Eagle syndrome. In one pati...
OBJECTIVE To describe stylohyoid complex syndrome (SHCS) as a new diagnostic classification of all lateral neck and/or facial pain conditions resulting from an elongated styloid process, ossified stylohyoid ligament, or elongated hyoid bone. All of these pathologic conditions result in tension and reduced distensibility of the stylohyoid complex (SHC), with resultant irritation of the surroundi...
An unusual case of a unilaterally elongated styloid process with a length of 5.8 cm was found on a dry skull of a male cadaver. During his life the subject was complaining for reported ipsilateral otalgia presumably due to nerve compression from the elongated styloid process. The symptomatology appeared by such an anatomical variant as well as relative literature is discussed in this paper.
