A novel method for producing styrenes from trans-cinnamic acids was developed. When trans-cinnamic acid was incubated with plant cell cultures at room temperature, styrene was obtained. 4-Hydroxy-3-methoxystyrene (2a), 3-nitrostyrene (2f) and furan (2g) were synthesized quantitatively.

Cinnamic acid (CA) derivatives have recently received focus due to their anticancer, antioxidant, and antidiabetic properties. The present study aimed to determine the effects of cinnamic acid on the circadian clock, which is a cell-autonomous endogenous system that generates circadian rhythms that govern the behavior and physiology of most organisms. Cinnamic acid significantly shortened the c...

Ammonia-lyase activity for L-phenylalanine, m-hydroxyphenylalanine and L-tyrosine was demonstrated in cell-free extracts ofSporobolomyces roseus. Cultures of this organism converted DL-[ring-14C]phenylalanine and L-[U-14C]tyrosine into the corresponding cinnamic acid. Tracer studies showed that these compounds were further metabolized to [14C]protocatechuic acid. Benzoic acid andp-hydroxybenzoi...

Several 2,3-unsaturated carboxylic acids, such as trans-cinnamic acid and its derivatives, were found to be halogenated by chloroperoxidase of Caldariomyces fumago in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and either Cl- or Br-. Cinnamic acid, 4-hydroxycinnamic acid, 4-methoxycinnamic acid, and 3,4-dimethoxycinnamic acid were suitable substrates of chloroperoxidase, and were converted to 2-halo-3-hy...

In this study, Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile (Posidoniaceae), which is a widely distributed phanerogam in Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, was investigated for the phenolic compounds that have the potential to be used in pharmaceutical sciences. The leaves, separated as young and mature leaves, were extracted and analyzed by high-performance liquid chromotagraphy (HPLC). The younger leaves wer...

Shikimic acid and its role in the formation of aromatic amino acids, benzoic acids, and cinnamic acids is described, along with further modifications leading to lignans and lignin, phenylpropenes, and coumarins. Combinations of the shikimate pathway and the acetate pathway are responsible for the biosynthesis of styrylpyrones, flavonoids and stilbenes, flavonolignans, and isoflavonoids. Terpeno...

The paper reports the isolation and characterization of β-sitosterol, t-cinnamic acid [undecyl (E)-3-(4hydroxyphenyl)-2-propenoate], an unknown coumarin and a lignan type resin glycoside from the tuberous roots of Ipomoea digitata. The structures of the compounds were elucidated on the basis of extensive chemical and spectroscopic data. Importantly, one of the compounds exhibited significant an...
