Coulomb cluster of dust particles in an RF helium plasma under cryogenic environment is observed experimentally. Background neutral temperature is controlled by cryogenic liquid such as liquid helium or liquid nitrogen. Dust dynamics in a sheath is studied. A dust injected into a sheath moves toward an equilibrium position where the sheath electric force balances with the gravitational force. D...

Charging currents of electrons and ions to a spherical dust grain in a uniform magnetized dusty plasma have been examined. It is found that the external magnetic field reduces the charging currents, thereby decreasing the dust charge fluctuation damping of a low-frequency electrostatic wave in a dusty plasma.

Electrostatic charging of particles in enclosed spaces has been shown to be an effective means of reducing airborne dust. Dust generated during the hatching process has been strongly implicated in Salmonella transmission, which complicates the cleaning and disinfecting processes for hatchers. Following two preliminary trials in which dust reduction was measured, four trials were conducted to ev...

We study the radial and vertical stability of dust grains launched with all charge-to-mass ratios at arbitrary distances from rotating planets with complex magnetic fields. We show that the aligned dipole magnetic field model analyzed by Jontof-Hutter and Hamilton (2012) is an excellent approximation in most cases, but that fundamentally new physics arises with the inclusion of non-axisymmetric...

We consider the influence of dust charge fluctuations on damping of the dust-ion-acoustic waves. It is assumed that all grains have equal masses but charges are not constant in time they may fluctuate in time. The dust charges are not really independent of the variations in the plasma potentials. All modes will influence the charging mechanism, and feedback will lead to several new interesting ...

In this report we present our progress of the NRA 02-OSS-01 project on the development of a prototype Dust Particle Analyzer (DPA) and its performance under simulated Martian atmospheric conditions. Both theoretical analysis assuming the predicted environmental conditions of Mars and experimental data on the development of the DPA show that the instrument has an excellent potential for its appl...

Four hundred and eighty-six textile workers in three cotton mills and one wool/synthetic mill were studied for symptoms and functional effects of workroom exposure to dust. Byssinosis was found in 5.7% of 386 cotton workers, with an apparent threshold level of 0.5 mg cotton dust/m3 of air. Mean post-shift functional declines were greater in workers exposed to greater than or equal to 0.2 mg/m3....

Introduction: Mars is a planet of many apparent dichotomies in topography, atmospheric evolution , hydrology, and geomagnetism. We describe yet another set of extremes in the area of atmospheric chemistry. While solar photons in fair-weather are a known and well-studied driver of Martian chemistry, there is increasing evidence that electro-chemistry unique to dust storms may be a second new dri...

A linear stability analysis of ion-acoustic and dust-acoustic waves is carried out using a multifluid model in the presence of ionization, ion drag, and collisions of ions and dust with the background neutral gas. It is found that an unstable dust-acoustic mode of nonzero real frequency can be generated via a resonance phenomenon. This resonance develops as the frequency of the dust-ion-acousti...

Abstract Comprehensive upgrades to the dust transport code Dust in TOKamaks (DTOKS) that extend plasma-dust interaction model are presented and compared with recent measurements of DIII-D. Simulations incorporating variation physical properties graphite temperature size a stationary plasma background suggest substantial decrease lifetimes due principally thermal expansion. The trajectories 53 g...
