Objectives: To test Basic Psychological Needs Theory (BPNT; Deci & Ryan, 2002) to determine if psychological need thwarting experienced when physically active contributes to the understanding of wellbeing and ill-being. Design/method: Participants (N 1⁄4 155, 67.70% female, Mage 1⁄4 37.46 years; SDage 1⁄4 19.89 years) completed assessments of psychological need satisfaction and thwarting, subje...

Parts of the United Kingdom have the highest incidence, prevalence and mortality rates for multiple sclerosis in the world. Although methods of ascertainment are not standardised, regional differences and changes with time are present for each of these statistics. Mortality has declined, whereas prevalence and hospital discharge rates have increased owing in part to the improved survival but al...

In DNA site-specific recombination catalysed by tyrosine recombinases, two pairs of DNA strands are sequentially exchanged between separate duplexes and the mechanisms that confer directionality to this theoretically reversible reaction remain unclear. The tyrosine recombinase TnpI acts at the internal resolution site (IRS) of the transposon Tn4430 to resolve intermolecular transposition produc...

Immunodominant T cell epitopes of myelin basic protein (MBP) may be target antigens for major histocompatibility complex class II-restricted, autoreactive T cells in multiple sclerosis (MS). Since susceptibility to MS is associated with the DR2 haplotype, the binding and presentation of the immunodominant MBP(84-102) peptide by DR2 antigens were examined. The immunodominant MBP(84-102) peptide ...

Narcolepsy and cataplexy began one year before treatment of a left mid-temporal primary B-cells lymphoma in a HLA DR2 negative man. Treatment with radio therapy and immunosuppression induced regression of the lymphoma and disappearance of narcolepsy and cataplexy.

PURPOSE Increased adrenergic activity in response to chronic stress is known to promote tumor growth by stimulating the tumor microenvironment. The focus of the current study was to determine whether dopamine, an inhibitory catecholamine, could block the effects of chronic stress on tumor growth. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN Expression of dopamine receptors (DR1-DR5) was analyzed by reverse transcript...

The pattern of HLA-DR antigens was studied in a group of 66 patients with Addisonian pernicious anaemia, comprising a subgroup of 18 patients with associated endocrine disease and a subgroup of 48 patients with no associated endocrine disease. Compared with a control group of 120 subjects all 66 patients showed an increase in HLA-DR2 and DR4 and a decrease in DR3 (p less than 0.02). Significant...

STUDY OBJECTIVES Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) hypocretin-1 levels and their relationship with the clinical characteristics of narcolepsy without cataplexy have not been well elucidated. Our aim was to examine whether clinical characteristics vary with CSF hypocretin-1 levels among narcoleptic patients without cataplexy. DESIGN Clinical features, variables on the multiple sleep latency test, and ...

In the present study we determined the frequencies of four haplotypes of the human T-cell lymphotropic virus-related endogenous sequence, HRES-1, in 110 multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and 100 healthy control subjects from the United Kingdom. We found evidence of an association between this endogenous retrovirus and MS (p < 0.01), in particular reflecting an increased frequency of HRES-1 haplo...
