BACKGROUND Methanol extracts and alkaloid fractions of different parts of four plant species belonging to Solanaceae family and used in Mexican traditional medicine were investigated for their total phenolic contents, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. MATERIALS AND METHODS The total phenolic compounds of each extract was determined according to the Folin-Ciocalteu method, while th...

BACKGROUND The involvement of free radicals and oxidative stress in HIV infection has been extensively studied, and the benefits of antioxidant supplementation in animal studies have been demonstrated. However, few studies have demonstrated a benefit in clinical studies. OBJECTIVE To verify the effects of dietary supplementation with Agaricus sylvaticus, a mushroom rich in antioxidants, on th...

Diospyros kaki folium, Laminaria japonica thallus and Undaria pinnatifida thallus have been used traditionally in Korea to promote maternal health. The scavenging activity against DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radicals of the methanol extracts of these plants were investigated. The extract of D. kaki was found to be the most potent, with an IC(50) value of 0.11 mg/ml.

The antioxidant capacity of Ocotea tampicensis (Meissner) Hemsley, Bursera simaruba (L.) Sarg, Pseudobombax ellipticum (Kunth) Dugand, Hamelia patens Jaqc and Croton reflexifolius Kunth was evaluated. Ethanolic and aqueous extractions were performed at concentrations of 15, 30, 60, 120 and 240 mg / 100ml. Colorimetric tests ABTS, DPPH and FRAP were used. The results were expressed as equivalent...

A pectin (CAP) was extracted from the husk of Cicer arietinum L. Monosaccharide analysis of CAP revealed the dominance of galacturonic acid and smaller amounts of galactose, arabinose, rhamnose, glucose, xylose and mannose. Viscosimetric analysis showed that the intrinsic viscosity ([η]) and the molecular weight (MW) of CAP were 296 mL/g and 105 kDa, respectively. The degree of esterification (...

Purpose: To determine the potent antioxidants among six hydroxy-bearing cinnamaldehyde compounds and their corresponding acids. Methods: The antioxidative activities were evaluated by scavenging 2, 2’-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radicals and anti-hemolysis of human red blood cells (RBCs). Fourier transform infrared spectrometry(FT-IR, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)and mass spectrome...

Dietary antioxidants could alleviate oxidative damage to cellular components via their ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species and other free radicals. In this regard wholegrain foods are recognized sources of dietary antioxidants and thus they are linked with health promotion and reduced risk of chronic diseases. In the current study high-lutein wholegrain bread, cookie and muffin products...

Objective: Corchorus olitorius is a household leafy vegetable with several medicinal uses. The anti-oxidative and certain biochemical indices of the methanol leaves extract in an in-vivo and in-vitro experiments were studied. Method: Phenols, Flavonoids were determined by Folin Ciocalteu and Aluminium chloride assays while Hydroxyl, 1-1-diphenyl-2picrylhydraxyl (DPPH) radicals and Malondialdehy...
