Simple and efficient gene transfer into the nucleus would facilitate non-viral gene delivery. One promising method of non-viral gene delivery is to apply penetration enhancers. Chemicals, such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and menthol, may have promise as non-toxic vehicles in improving gene transfer efficiency. In this study, the cytotoxic effects...

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is widely used as a solvent or vehicle for biological studies, and for treatment of specific disorders, including traumatic brain injury and several forms of amyloidosis. As Alzheimer's disease (AD) brains are characterized by deposits of β-amyloid peptides, it has been suggested that DMSO could be used as a treatment for this devastating disease. AD brains are also ch...

Investigations of voltammetry zirconium deposition from DMSO solution on different substrates were taken. It was found that this is multi-electron process proceeding in a few stages. Moreover, zirconium layers were obtained on titanium, copper stainless steel and nickel. Obtained deposit was in form of white powder, which immediately was oxidized to ZrO2 in the presence of air.

Dielectric spectra of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)/water mixtures, over the entire concentration range, have been measured using the transmission line method at frequencies from 45 MHz to 26 GHz and at temperatures of 298-318 K. The relaxation times of the mixtures show a maximum at an intermediate molar fraction of DMSO. The specific structure of mixtures in different concentration regions was de...

BACKGROUND Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is an amphipathic molecule that displays a diversity of antitumor activities. Previous studies have demonstrated that DMSO can modulate AP-1 activity and lead to cell cycle arrest at the G1 phase. HLJ1 is a newly identified tumor and invasion suppressor that inhibits tumorigenesis and cancer metastasis. Its transcriptional activity is regulated by the transc...

Cryopreservation represents an effective technique to maintain the functional properties of human adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) and allows pooling of cells via long-term storage for clinical applications, e.g., cell-based therapies. It is crucial to reduce freezing injury during the cryopreservation process by loading the ASCs with the optimum concentration of suitable cryoprotective agents...

BACKGROUND, AIM The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) on the acute phase of experimental corrosive esophageal burns. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty male rats were allocated into five groups (control, acid burn, alkali burn, acid burn + DMSO and alkali burn + DMSO) of ten rats each. Acid and alkali burns were creating by burning the distal esophagus wit...

AIM Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) is the most frequently used agent for hematopoietic cell (HC) graft cryopreservation. This study aimed to monitor blood pressure and heart rate (HR) during HC graft infusion and assess the impact of cryopreservation with DMSO. METHODS 153 HC graft infusions in 153 consecutive hematological patients (mean age 49.1 -/+ 12.6 years; 80 males) were evaluated. Cryoprese...

The structures of micelles of the surfactant polysorbate 80 (Tween 80) in 0-50% aqueous dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solutions (pH 7.2, ionic strength 2.44 mM) were investigated by means of small-angle X-ray scattering. At DMSO concentrations of 0-20%, core-shell cylinder micelles formed, and at 30-50% DMSO, core-shell discus micelles formed, that is, changing the hydrophobicity of the DMSO solven...
