Background: Considering the increasing rates of early hospital discharge and kernicterus in healthy full term newborns, timely identification of neonates at risk of severe hyperbilirubinemia is of great significance. The aim of this study was to investigate the predictive value of umbilical cord serum (UCS) bilirubin level for subsequent hyperbilirubinemia. Moreover, we compared the predictive ...

We studied 91 offspring of ABO incompatible preganacies and 30 controls resulting from O--O pregnancies to test whether cord bilirubin levels could be used to predict the severity of hyperbilirubinaemia in ABO incompatibility. Blood group, direct Coombs's test, and serum bilirubin estimations were carried out on cord blood, and bilirubin estimations at 12, 24, 36, and 48 hours of life.

The inducible isoform of haem oxygenase (HO-1) has been proposed as an effective system to counteract oxidant-induced cell injury. In several circumstances, this cytoprotective effect has been attributed to increased generation of the antioxidant bilirubin during haem degradation by HO-1. However, a direct implication for HO-1-derived bilirubin in protection against oxidative stress remains to ...

The negative interference caused by haemolysis in manual bilirubin assays contrasts with the positive interference reported for some automated methods utilizing the same basic chemistry. A comparison was therefore made of the haemolysis interference associated with several automated bilirubin methodologies: multilayer film (Kodak Ektachem- total bilirubin (TBil), direct bilirubin (DBil), conjug...

Background and Aim. There are no accurate methods of differentiating acute biliary pancreatitis. Obstructions of biliary ducts, idiopathic pancreatitis may be related with biliary origin which needs identification for acute treatment. We searched for the predictivity of biochemical markers in early acute biliary pancreatitis. Patients and Methods. Serum levels of AST (Aspartate Transaminase),AL...

Introduction: Icterus is the most common medical problem in neonates. Phototherapy is standard treatment of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. This study aims to compare efficacy and length of hospitalization of double and triple phototherapy in term newborns with indirect hyperbilirubinemia. Methods: In a randomized clinical trial 40 healthy term newborns (gestational age>37 weeks) with weight≥250...

BACKGROUND Small changes of bilirubin and liver enzymes are often detected during the acute phase of stroke, but their origin and significance are still poorly understood. METHODS On days 0, 3, 7, and 14 after admission, 180 patients with ischemic stroke underwent serial determinations of bilirubin, GOT, GPT, γGT, alkaline phosphatase, C-reactive protein (CRP) and complete blood count. On day...

Background Serum bilirubin is a potent endogenous antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties. Several cross-sectional studies have reported that bilirubin was negatively associated with metabolic syndrome. However, in recent longitudinal studies, the relations between bilirubin and metabolic syndrome are inconsistent. Moreover, previous studies mainly focused on serum total bilirubin which i...

OBJECTIVE To determine whether hepatic biochemical changes, as measured by routinely available tests indicative of hepatocellular necrosis, cholestasis, or altered hepatic clearance of bilirubin, occur in association with low to moderate exposure to styrene commonly experienced in industrial production. METHODS Two independent cross sectional studies were performed comparing serum hepatic tra...

Background: Routine repeat testing of critical laboratory values is very common these days to increase their accuracy and to avoid reporting false or infeasible results. We figure that repeat testing of critical laboratory values has any benefits or not.   Methods : We examined 2233 repeated critical laboratory values in 13 different hematology and chemistry tests including: hemoglobin, white...
