PURPOSE To compare outcomes of macular hole surgery using sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas versus perfluoropropane (C3F8) gas for idiopathic macular hole repair. DESIGN Retrospective, interventional, comparative cohort study. METHODS Institutional clinical practice. A consecutive group of patients undergoing macular hole surgery with SF6 group (38 eyes of 38 patients) and a nonconsecutive, con...
We report a magneto-transport study of a two-dimensional hole gas confined to a strained Ge quantum well grown on a relaxed Si0.2Ge0.8 virtual substrate. The conductivity of the hole gas measured as a function of a perpendicular magnetic field exhibits a zero-field peak resulting from weak anti-localization. The peak develops and becomes stronger upon increasing the hole density by means of a t...
We design a novel nano-ring resonator using two-dimensional photonic crystal (2D-PhC), for bio-sensing applications. The structure of biosensor is created by two-curve-shaped ring resonator which sandwiched by two waveguides. These are configured by removing one row of air holes. The refractive index of sensing hole is changed by binding an analyte. Hence, intensity of the transmission spectrum...
Spin-charge coupling is studied for a strongly confined two-dimensional hole gas subject to a perpendicular magnetic field. The study is based on spin-charge coupled drift-diffusion equations derived from quantum-kinetic equations in an exact manner. The spin-orbit interaction induces an extra out-of-plane spin polarization. This contribution exhibits a persistent oscillatory pattern in the str...
The photon-absorption edge in a weakly interacting one-dimensional electron gas is studied, treating backscattering of conduction electrons from the core hole exactly. Close to threshold, there is a power-law singularity in the absorption, I(ǫ) ∝ ǫ−α, with α = 3/8 + δ+/π − δ2 +/2π where δ+ is the forward scattering phase shift of the core hole. In contrast to previous theories, α is finite (and...
Full-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are presented for nano electrospray ionization (ESI) with various emitter designs. Our CFD electrohydrodynamic simulations are based on the Taylor-Melcher leaky-dielectric model, and the volume of fluid technique for tracking the fast-changing liquid-gas interface. The numerical method is first validated for a conventional 20 μm in...
Charged carriers with different spin states are spatially separated in a two-dimensional hole gas. Because of strong spin-orbit interaction, holes at the Fermi energy in GaAs have different momenta for two possible spin states traveling in the same direction, and, correspondingly, different cyclotron orbits in a weak magnetic field. Two point contacts, acting as a monochromatic source of ballis...
GaAs-based quantum point contacts (QPCs) are exploited to spatially resolve and analyze the ballistic, nonequilibrium flow of photogenerated electrons in a nanoscale circuit. Electron-hole pairs are photogenerated in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), and the resulting current through an adjacent QPC is measured as a function of the laser spot position. The transmission of photogenerated el...
We discuss the optimization of optical microcavity designs based on two-dimensional photonic crystals for the purpose of strong coupling between the cavity field and a single neutral atom trapped within a hole. We present numerical predictions for the quality factors and mode volumes of localized defect modes as a function of geometric parameters, and discuss some experimental challenges relate...
A recent theory of magnetic field amplification in electron holes is extended to derive the magnetic susceptibility of an electron-hole gas propagating in a magnetic flux tube along the ambient magnetic field. It is shown that the hole gas behaves diamagnetic adding some small amount to the well-known Landau susceptibility in the hole-carrying volume.
