A 63-year-old female with chronic renal failure on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis developed chronic peritonitis. A CDC group EO-3 organism was isolated from the peritoneal dialysis fluid on five occasions over a period of 4 months. This is the first reported isolation of this organism in which it is associated with a patient on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.
Our aim was to determine whether the increase in serum pancreatic lipase values, reported in patients with chronic renal failure maintained on haemodialysis, is the result of haemoconcentration by fluid removal during dialysis, or whether it is due to lipase stimulation by endothelial lipoprotein lipase, induced by the heparin used as an anticoagulant. We therefore compared the increases in ser...
To assess whether phosphate depletion is an aetiological factor in osteomalacic dialysis osteodystrophy we undertook a prospective trial of phosphate-enriched dialysis fluid, in association with oral 1alpha-hydroxycholecalciferol, for this condition. Thirty patients started the trial; of the 27 who completed more than 6 months' treatment, 14 had iliac crest bone biopsies at the beginning and en...
BACKGROUND Fluid overload is not only the characteristic but also an important complication in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Angiopoietin-2 (Angpt2) disturbs endothelium and vessel permeability, which may induce fluid overload. The aim of this study is to examine the interaction between fluid status and Angpt2 in adverse renal outcomes of CKD. METHODS This cohort study enrolled 290 p...
INTRODUCTION Hydrothorax is a rare complication of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) which can progress quickly to cause acute respiratory distress. CASE PRESENTATION We present a 76 year-old female with a past medical history significant for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on daily home peritoneal dialysis for 2 years presented to the hospital from home with shortness of breath...
Fluid overload is one of the major presentations in patients with late stage chronic kidney disease (CKD). Diabetes is the leading cause of renal failure, and progression of diabetic nephropathy has been associated with changes in extracellular fluid volume. The aim of the study was to assess the association of fluid overload and diabetes in commencing dialysis and rapid renal function decline ...
UNLABELLED Peritonitis is a serious problem in children receiving peritoneal dialysis. Campylobacter jejuni is an unusual cause of peritonitis. A 10-year-old boy who had end stage renal failure due to atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome was admitted to our hospital with abdominal pain and fever. Peritoneal dialysis fluid was cloudy and microscopic examination showed abundant leukocytes. Intraper...
The significance of endotoxin-free, sterile dialysis fluid for long-term, high-quality hemodialysis treatment is obvious and highly desired[MF1] . current study aimed to determine endotoxin the water quality used in twenty centers. Eighty samples (40 x dialysates 40 water) were tested using LAL gel clot method. results revealed a variation produced that makes it unaccepted compared internationa...
A significant fall in BP during dialysis, so-called intradialytic hypotension (IDH), is an important clinical problem. IDH is common, occurring in 15%–20% of treatments.1 IDH is often associated with distressing symptoms such as lightheadedness, weakness, muscle cramps, and nausea and vomiting. As could be imagined, reducing blood flow to vital organs, even transiently, is associated with a pan...
