We evaluated the use of mixed oligonucleotide probes hybridized to metagenomic clones spotted on high density membranes. The pooled probes included oligonucleotides designed for genes associated with denitrification, antibiotic resistance, and dehalogenation among others. Pyrosequence comparison between the clones and the original DNA demonstrated the utility of clone screening with pooled probes.

An operationally simple iron-catalyzed hydrodehalogenation of aryl halides has been developed with 1 mol% Fe(acac)(3) and commercial t-BuMgCl as reductant. The mild reaction conditions (THF, 0 degrees C, 1.5 h) effect rapid chemoselective dehalogenation of (hetero)aryl halides (I, Br, Cl) and tolerate F, Cl, OR, SR, CN, CO(2)R, and vinyl groups.

Biotransformation and transport of Trichloroethane (TCA) in a saturated column has been simulated by employing a mathematical model developed by Corapcioglu et al., (1989). The model predicts the reductive dehalogenation of dissolved chlorinated aliphatics such as TCE and TCA under anaerobic conditions. The numerical results are compared with experimental data of Vogel and McCarty (1987) .

Many synthetically produced halogenated aliphatic compounds are xenobiotic chemicals in the sense that they do not naturally occur on earth at biologically significant concentrations. Nevertheless, various microorganisms have been isolated that possess the capacity to grow at the expense of these compounds, and to use them as a carbon and energy source under aerobic conditions. This raises a nu...

A versatile heterogeneous photocatalysis protocol was developed by using ruthenium bipyridyl tethered porous organosilica (Ru-POS). The versatility of the Ru-POS catalyst in organo-photocatalysis was explored by (i) oxidative aromatization of Hantzsch ester, (ii) reductive dehalogenation of alkyl halides, and (iii) functional group interconversion (FGI) of alcohols to alkyl halides.

Polymerization of 1,3,5-tris(4-bromophenyl)benzene via dehalogenation on graphene and hexagonal boron nitride is investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy experiments and density functional theory calculations. This work reveals how the interactions between molecules and graphene or h-BN grown on Ni(111) govern the surface-confined synthesis of polymers through C-C coupling.

Bacterial adaptation to growth with toxic halogenated chemicals was explored in the context of methylotrophic metabolism of Methylobacterium extorquens, by comparing strains CM4 and DM4, which show robust growth with chloromethane and dichloromethane, respectively. Dehalogenation of chlorinated methanes initiates growth-supporting degradation, with intracellular release of protons and chloride ...
