Pharyngeal delay is a significant swallowing disorder often resulting in aspiration. It is suspected that pharyngeal delay originates from sensory impairment, but a direct demonstration of a link between oral sensation and pharyngeal delay is lacking. In this study involving six patients with complaints of dysphagia, taste sensation of the oral tongue was measured and subsequently related to sw...
The development of small sensitive pressure-detecting devices for the accurate and continuous registration of esophageal pressures has revived interest in the mechanism of deglutition in the normal man and in his disease states. As a result of the application of these new techniques to the study of esophageal motility and the correlation of physiologic, pharmacologic, and anatomic data, new int...
the reliability of surface electromyographic (semg) variables during swallowing determines the potential usefulness of these measures in swallowing assessment and treatment. this study aimed to establish the reliability of the semg measures of the swallowing function of muscles during different swallowing conditions in healthy young and old volunteers. two groups of volunteers (24 older adults,...
Post-polio syndrome (PPS) in individuals with polio longer than 15 years is characterized by weakness and/or muscle fatigue, deficit of deglutition and breath and periodic limb movements (PLM) during sleep. We undertook a review of 99 patients with PPS, and assessed the frequency of PLM through polysomnographic recordings at our sleep disorders unit. The total number of PLM, total time of sleep...
OBJECTIVE Before the advanced evaluation of deglutition and selection of a treatment method, objective screening methods are necessary for patients with dysphagia. In this study a new electroclinical test was established to evaluate patients with dysphagia. METHODS This test is based on determining piecemeal deglutition; which is a physiological phenomenon occurring when a bolus of a large vo...
The current literature is reviewed in this paper regarding the application of diagnostic imaging in the evaluation of swallowing disorders of the dog. The applications of radiography, contrast radiography, and contrast videofluoroscopy are discussed with pertinent case examples provided for emphasis. The indications for image-guided interventions are also described.
