Pseudomonas putida DTB grew aerobically with N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) as a sole carbon source, initially breaking it down into 3-methylbenzoate and diethylamine. The former was further metabolized via 3-methylcatechol and meta ring cleavage. A gene from DTB, dthA, was heterologously expressed and shown to encode the ability to hydrolyze DEET into 3-methylbenzoate and diethylamine.
Introduction: The high performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) is an inexpensive, fast and easy method in comparison with other material analysis methods. Gas chromatography (GC) method usually is used to analysis repellents. In this study HPTLC is used to simultaneous quantitative and qualitative determination of diethyl meta-toluamide (DEET) and dimethyl phthalate (DMP), which are the...
BACKGROUND Insect repellents are prophylactic tools against a number of vector-borne diseases. There is growing demand for repellents outperforming DEET in cost and safety, but with the current technologies R&D of a new product takes almost 10 years, with a prohibitive cost of $30 million dollar in part due to the demand for large-scale synthesis of thousands of test compounds of which only 1 m...
deet is a simple but powerful debugger for ANSI C and Java. It differs from conventional debuggers in that it is machine-independent, graphical, programmable, distributed, extensible, and small. Low-level operations are performed by communicating with a “nub,” which is a small set of machine-dependent functions that are embedded in the target program at compile-time, or are implemented on top o...
For the use of topical insect repellents, DEET and picaridin, human health risk assessments were conducted for various population subgroups. Acute, subchronic, and chronic dermal exposures were examined. No-observed-effect-levels (NOELs) of 200, 300, and 100mg/kg body weight (BW) were used as endpoints for DEET for acute, subchronic, and chronic exposures, respectively. For picaridin, a NOEL of...
26 Mosquito behavior is heavily influenced by the chemical molecules in the environment. 27 Modifying insect behavior by harnessing this knowledge to reduce vector-host contact is a 28 powerful method for disease prevention. N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) is the most 29 widely used insect repellent on the market and an excellent example of a chemical that has been 30 used to modify insect be...
Reducing the number of host-vector interactions is an effective way to reduce the spread of vector-borne diseases. Repellents are widely used to protect humans from a variety of protozoans, viruses, and nematodes. DEET (N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide), a safe and effective repellent, was developed during World War II. Fear of possible side effects of DEET has created a large market for "natural" DE...
The repellent 1-(3-cyclohexen-1-yl-carbonyl)-2-methylpiperidine (AI3-37220) was compared with 2 formulations of diethylmethylbenzamide (deet) for its effectiveness in protecting 4 humans against the bites of Anopheles koliensis mosquitoes at a village in Central Province, Papua New Guinea. A mean of 77.2 +/- 10.5 bites/human/10 min of An. koliensis was collected on ethanol-treated (control) vol...
Nepetalactone, the primary component of catnip oil, was compared with the repellent N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (deet) for its ability to affect the host-seeking ability ofAedes aegypti (L.). A triple cage olfactometer was used to bioassay each substance and to assess its attraction inhibition (spatial repellent) attributeswhencombinedwith the following attractants: carbondioxide, acetone, a ...
Two commercial repellants were evaluated in the laboratory against Leptotrombidium fletcheri chiggers. The active ingredient in one was DEET and in the other was citrus oil. Excito-toxicity effect was studied and it was determined by the time ("escape time") chiggers took to move off filter papers treated with the repellants. All chiggers exposed on filter papers treated with DEET died and did ...
