The anisotropic full-waveform inversion (FWI) is a seismic inverse problem for multiple parameters, which aims to simultaneously reconstruct the vertical velocity and parameters of earth’s subsurface. This multiparameter suffers from two issues. First, objective function data fitting less sensitive parameters. Second, crosstalk effect among different worsens model update in iterative inversion....

[1] Taking advantage of large datasets of both gravity and elastic wave arrival time observations available for the Parkfield, California region, we generated an image consistent with both types of data. Among a variety of strategies, the best result was obtained from a simultaneous inversion with a stability requirement that encouraged the perturbed model to remain close to a starting model co...

<p style='text-indent:20px;'>In this paper, we consider the inverse problem of determining location and shape a sound-soft or sound-hard obstacle from modulus total-field collected on measured curve for an incident point source. We propose system nonlinear integral equations based iterative scheme to reconstruct both obstacle. Several validating numerical examples are provided illustrate ...

This paper describes a curve-fitting approach for the design of capacity approaching coded modulation for orthogonal signal sets with non-coherent detection. In particular, bit-interleaved coded modulation with iterative decoding is considered. Decoder metrics are developed that do not require knowledge of the signal-to-noise ratio, yet still offer very good performance.

We consider estimation of the covariance matrix of a random vector under the constraint that certain elements in the covariance matrix are zero. Assuming that the random vector follows a multivariate normal distribution, in which case the model is also known as covariance graph model, we present a new algorithm for maximum likelihood estimation of the covariance matrix with zero pattern. We giv...

Abstract The number of adjustable parameters in a model or hypothesis is often taken as the formal expression its simplicity. I take issue with this `definition´ and argue that comparative simplicity has quasi-empirical measure, reflecting experts’ judgements who track past use model-type across domains. Since models are represented by restricted sets functions suitable space, formally speaking...

1 Curve Fitting and Polymers The availability of data from well-characterized samples such as those offered by Beamson and Briggs [1] owe much to the popularity of XPS as a tool for understanding the chemistry of polymers. A typical C 1s envelope [2] (Figure 1) includes structure that offers chemical information about a sample, but without some initial starting point it is difficult to construc...
