Viral myocarditis exhibits different clinical phenotypes depending on the age of the patient. In pediatric patients, viral myocarditis can present as acute heart failure and cardiogenic shock, and in older patients, it often presents as chronic, slowly progressive heart failure and dilated cardiomyopathy. The severity of viral myocarditis is determined by a delicate balance between the viral in...

Alcohol, especially after prolonged and excessive consumption, results in marked alteration of host immunity and increased susceptibility to infection. To determine whether ethanol consumption exacerbates coxsackievirus B3 cardiomyopathy during murine acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), female C57BL/6 mice were infected with LP-BM5 retrovirus and administered 40% ethanol both in water an...

Stress granules (SGs) are dynamic cytosolic aggregates containing messenger ribonucleoproteins and target poly-adenylated (A)-mRNA. A key component of SGs is Ras-GAP SH3 domain binding protein-1 (G3BP1), which in part mediates protein-protein and protein-RNA interactions. SGs are modulated during infection by several viruses, however, the function and significance of this process remains poorly...

Stress granules (SGs) contain stalled messenger ribonucleoprotein complexes and are related to the regulation of mRNA translation. Picornavirus infection can interfere with the formation of SGs. However, the detailed molecular mechanisms and functions of picornavirus-mediated regulation of SG formation are not clear. Here, we found that the 2A protease of a picornavirus, EV71, induced atypical ...

We present the results of a programme of thermal-infrared imaging of nineteen z ∼ 1 radio galaxies from the 3CR and 3CRR (LRL) samples. We detect emission at L (3.8μm) from four objects; in each case the emission is unresolved at 1-arcsec resolution. Fifteen radio galaxies remain undetected to sensitive limits of L ≈ 15.5. Using these data in tandem with archived HST data and near-infrared spec...

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) nuclear antigen 3C (EBNA-3C) is essential for EBV-mediated immortalization of human B lymphocytes and regulates both the cell cycle and transcription. Transient reporter gene assays have implicated a pivotal role for EBNA-3C in the regulation of transcription of the majority of latency-associated genes expressed during the EBV growth program, including the viral oncopro...

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) nuclear antigen 3C (EBNA-3C) protein is a transcriptional regulator of viral and cellular genes that is essential for EBV-mediated immortalization of B lymphocytes in vitro. EBNA-3C can inhibit transcription through an association with the cellular DNA-binding protein Jkappa, a function shared by EBNA-3A and EBNA-3B. Here, we report a mechanism by which EBNA-3C can ...

A 29-year-old woman suffered from headaches, diarrhoea, and high grade fever followed by a unilateral retinal vasculitis, papillitis, and chorioretinitis. Abnormal electrocardiographic findings and antibody titre dynamics strongly suggested a coxsackievirus B3 infection. With respect to prior observations on coxsackievirus B group associated uveitis this viral infection may be considered in pat...

In Thailand, hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is usually caused by enterovirus 71 or coxsackievirus A16. To determine the cause of a large outbreak of HFMD in Thailand during June-August 2012, we examined patient specimens. Coxsackievirus A6 was the causative agent. To improve prevention and control, causes of HFMD should be monitored.
