In a prospective study over 21 months, serum C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration was measured serially in 39 consecutive patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. All patients with peritonitis mounted a CRP response, and the height of the response correlated well with the severity and extent of the peritoneal damage. Patients who recovered uneventfully after antimicrobia...
Pleural effusion or hydrothorax is a relatively rare but well-recognized complication associated with peritoneal dialysis (PD). We describe the successful long term resolution of a patient who developed pleural effusions after starting continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), by altering the PD prescription to normal volume daytime ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (DAPD) transiently befo...
Four cases of peritonitis caused by the filamentous fungus Paecilomyces variotii in patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis are reported. Removal of the Tenckhoff catheter and antifungal chemotherapy led to resolution of symptoms in all cases. Possible contaminating events are discussed, and reported infections with P. variotii are reviewed.
INTRODUCTION Peritonitis can happen in patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. It is commonly caused by Staphylococcus aureus, which is the basis of the empiric choice of antibiotics. Here we report a case that was caused by Ewingella americana and thus required different considerations of treatment. CASE PRESENTATION A 76-year-old Chinese woman underwent continuous amb...
OBJECTIVE to determine the cost of institutional and familial care for patients with chronic kidney disease replacement therapy with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. METHODS a study of the cost of care for patients with chronic kidney disease treated with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis was undertaken. The sample size (151) was calculated with the formula of the averages f...
BACKGROUND Subcapsular hepatic steatosis is a rare atypical pattern of fatty deposition of the liver reported in patients with diabetic nephropathy receiving peritoneal dialysis with intraperitoneal insulin. To date, there has been only one pediatric and zero adult cases of subcapsular hepatic steatosis with no history of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. We report the first published ...
To the Editor: It was demonstrated that a higher peritoneal membrane solute transport rate is associated with a higher mortality risk and a trend to higher technique failure. It has been suggested that the bioincompatible nature of conventional peritoneal dialysis (PD) solutions contributes to the structural peritoneal membrane changes that lead to deterioration in solute transport characterist...
