Even if the visual impression of the photographic density of the brain in head CT images is shown as physically the same, it is known that optical illusions of lightness perception (assimilation, contrast, picture frame effect, etc.) occur and that practical density can be observed psychologically differently, according to differences in the color of the skull and background, and differences in...

Whether general patterns of signal evolution can be explained by selection for signal efficacy (detectability) has yet to be established. To establish the importance of signal efficacy requires evidence that both signals and their detectability to receivers have evolved in response to habitat shifts in a predictable fashion. Here, we test whether habitat structure has predictable effects on the...

UNLABELLED Radioiodine therapy with (131)I is used for treatment of suspected recurrence of differentiated thyroid carcinoma. Pretherapeutic (124)I PET/CT with a low activity (~1% of (131)I activity) can be performed to determine whether uptake of (131)I, and thereby the desired therapeutic effect, may be expected. However, false-negative (124)I PET/CT results as compared with posttherapeutic (...

This study was undertaken to determine T3 content in red cells by radioimmunoassay. T3 in red blood cells was solubilized fairly from the stroma by hemolysis and red-cell T3 content could be determined directly by radioimmunoassay of the lysate. After hemolysing red cells with an equal volume of distilled water, 0.4 ml of the hemolyzate was used for the assay. The red-cell T3 content was expres...

This paper presents a new technique for detecting resistive open defects in FPGAs. This technique is based on the reconfigurability feature of FPGAs. Using this technique, the detectability of a defect can be improved by several orders of magnitude. Also, a method is developed to scale the detectability. Simulation results show the effectiveness of this method.

The most popular method used to gain an understanding of population trends or of differences in bird abundance among land condition categories is to use information derived from point counts. Unfortunately, various factors can affect one's ability to detect birds, and those factors need to be controlled or accounted for so that any difference in one's index among time periods or locations is an...

UNLABELLED Attenuation, photon scatter, and distance-dependent collimator-detector response are major degrading factors in myocardial SPECT images. The current study investigated whether compensation for these factors improves perfusion defect detectability, and compared the results for human observers with a previous study using a mathematical observer. METHODS Four methods were investigated...

Acetylcholine (ACh) modulates neuronal activities in extensive brain regions to play an essential role in various brain functions including attention, learning and memory, and cognition. Although ACh is known to modulate information processing in the primary visual cortex (V1) in many species including rodent, its functional role in visual ability has remained unknown. We examined whether and h...

The ability to monitor fossil fuel carbon dioxide (FFCO2) emissions from subcontinental regions using atmospheric CO2 observations remains an important but unrealized goal. Here we explore a necessary but not sufficient component of this goal, namely, the basic question of the detectability of FFCO2 emissions from subcontinental regions. Detectability is evaluated by examining the degree to whi...
