Congenital sliding, oesophageal or type I hiatal hernia was diagnosed in a five-month-old pug puppy presented for evaluation of dyspnoea post feeding. The diagnosis was confirmed using plain film radiography. Surgical reduction of the hernia followed by plication of the oesophageal hiatus, oesophagopexy and left flank gastropexy permitted restoration of normal function. At 12 months of age, the...

Seventeen patients were diagnosed as having congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation of the lung during 1970-88. One case was associated with congenital diaphragmatic hernia and the child died before operation. The other 16 children underwent successful surgery. The patients presented in one of three ways--with neonatal respiratory impairment (12 cases) requiring urgent diagnosis and treatmen...

The incidence of congenital diaphragmatic hernia has been reported as 0.17-0.66 per 1,000 births. Despite advances in neonatal intensive care, congenital diaphragmatic hernia is associated with high mortality and morbidity. We report a neonate who was born with a left congenital diaphragmatic hernia and underwent surgical repair. The lack of ventilator flow response and flow cycling was identif...

Bochdalek hernia is a congenital disease characterized by protrusion of the abdominal organs into the thorax through the posterior defect in the diaphragma. The detection of incidental bochdalek hernia has increased because of the widespread use of the multidedector computed tomography. It is very rare in adult population. Intrathoracic kidney in bochdalek hernia is uncommon. In this paper, a 7...

Bochdalek hernia (BH) is the most common type of congenital diaphragm hernia and is rarely seen in adults. In adult patients, BH often remains asymptomatic or presents with nondiagnostic symptoms and may lead to complications, though rarely. The necrosis and perforations occurring in the hernia may lead to mortality. In this report, we present a 34-year-old pregnant woman at 24 gestational week...

METHODS This was a 5-year single-center retrospective review of fetal congenital diaphragmatic hernia referrals. Multiple prenatal variables were correlated with the need for a prosthetic repair. Statistical analyses were by Fisher's exact an...

Congenital diaphragmatic hernias constitute an infrequent but potentially serious presentation of bowel obstruction in the adult patient. Herein, we present a rare case of an adult patient with strangulation of colon within a Morgagni's hernia where timely recognition and intervention were life-saving. An 18-year-old female presented with an acute abdomen, respiratory failure, and shock seconda...

We conducted this study to assess the value of presence of hernia sac in prediction of postoperative outcome in congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). Data were obtained form medical records of 70 children operated for CDH between 2002-12. Postoperative neonatal death occurred in 1/10 (10%) of infants with a hernia sac and 26/60 (43.3%) in cases without a hernia sac, respectively (P =0.04). Per...
