Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) over-enrichment has accelerated eutrophication and promoted cyanobacterial blooms worldwide. The colonial bloom-forming cyanobacterial genus Microcystis is covered by sheaths which can protect cells from zooplankton grazing, viral or bacterial attack and other potential negative environmental factors. This provides a competitive advantage over other phytoplankton...

The effects of media conditioned by leukemic cells from 11 acute myeloblastic leukemia patients on the growth of autologous blast progenitors were studied. First, it was shown that T-cell-depleted leukemic cells from some patients release high levels of colony-stimulating activity into the culture medium, whereas following further depletion of phagocytic cells, the levels of colony-stimulating ...

In this study, we investigated the role of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) in the malignant evolution of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and the functional activity of IL-1 inhibitors. Bone marrow (BM) and peripheral blood (PB) low-density cells from 38 CML patients were studied in the colony-forming unit-granulocyte, erythrocyte, monocyte, megakaryocyte colony culture assay. Samples from pat...

The capillary human tumor clonogenic cell assay (HTCA) has been shown to have important advantages over conventional HTCAs. In the present report, this promising novel HTCA was further optimized and characterized using 46 primary human tumor specimens, 6 human tumor cell lines (1 astrocytoma, 2 colon carcinomas, 1 melanoma), and 2 murine leukemias. Hydrocortisone, epidermal growth factor, heat-...

Multicellular organisms that benefit from division of labour are presumably descended from colonial species that initially derived benefits from larger colony size, before the evolution of specialization. Life in a colony can have costs as well as benefits, but these can be hard to measure. We measured physiological costs to life in a colony using a novel method based on population dynamics, co...

INTRODUCTION All trans retinoic acid, the active metabolite of vitamin A, exerts profound effects on cell differentiation. On normal myeloid progenitors, retinoids switch the differentiation program of granulo-macrophagic progenitors towards the granulocytic lineage and consequently reduce CFU-M colony formation. Bone marrow and peripheral blood mononuclear cells from children with Juvenile Chr...

We demonstrate the first successful culture of human embryonic stem cells in microscale polydimethylsiloxane channels. The effects of two different feeder layers (irradiated mouse embryonic fibroblasts and a gel matrix (Matrigel, BD Biosciences)) on cell growth and morphology are investigated. Cell growth over a one-week period follows the normal pattern of attachment, colony expansion, and eve...

Monoclonal antibody (MAb) PK-2 inhibited the in vitro growth of nine Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides small-colony strains. In contrast to the results with polyclonal antisera, growth inhibition by MAb PK-2 was specific for M. mycoides subsp. mycoides small-colony strains and constituted a reliable means of distinguishing them from other mycoplasmas.

A comparison was made of the prevalence and relative quantification of deformed wing virus (DWV), Israeli acute paralysis virus (IAPV), black queen cell virus (BQCV), Kashmir bee virus (KBV), acute bee paralysis virus (ABPV) and sac brood virus (SBV) in brood and adult honey bees (Apis mellifera) from colonies selected for high (HMP) and low (LMP) Varroa destructor mite population growth. Two v...
