Ornithine ketoacid aminotransferase in bovine ocular tissues was studied biochemically. The retinal pigment epithelium, ciliary body, iris, and neuroretina showed high specific activity. The cornea and choroid revealed a lower activity. Aqueous humor, lens, vitreous body, and sclera showed no activity. The pH optima of the enzyme in the retinal pigment epithelium and ciliary body were near 8.0.

PURPOSE To determine the relative density and tissue localization of mRNAs for serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5HT) receptor subtypes in human ocular tissues and correlate with their possible functions in the eye. METHODS Total RNA was extracted from human ocular tissues samples from multiple donors and transcribed into cDNA. An optimized reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PC...

THE literature includes descriptions of over ten cases of haemangioma of the iris and four of haemangioma of the ciliary body. In reporting the first case of haemangioma of the iris examined histologically, Rodin (1929) mentioned nine others that had been published and stated that the diagnosis was obviously correct in only three of them. A similar view of the cases in the literature was held b...

are reported in the literature and only one of them is a ciliary body neurilemmoma. This is not correct, because according to Shields et al.2 (not cited) the reported cases of neurilemmoma are eight at least (associated and unassociated with neurofibromatosis), and two ofthem affected the ciliary body. Secondly, I would point out that in the case reported a fine needle aspiration biopsy could b...

AIMS To investigate the usefulness of ultrasound biomicroscopy for evaluating changes in the ciliary body in patients with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease. METHODS Ultrasound biomicroscopy was used to evaluate 14 eyes of seven patients diagnosed with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease. Cross sectional images of the ciliary body and thickness of the pars plana 3.0 mm posterior to the scleral spur were ...

PURPOSE To isolate and characterize ciliary body epithelial antigens reactive with a monoclonal antibody, 2B4.14.1. METHODS A mouse monoclonal antibody generated against human corneal endothelium, 2B4.14.1 reacts with nonpigmented epithelium of human and guinea pig ciliary bodies. The ciliary body proteins reactive with 2B4.14.1 were identified by Western blotting and were partially purified ...

A n active ciliary body controls the eye’s accommodation process, allowing near focusing to occur. The ciliary body is made up mainly of smooth muscle, known as the ciliary muscle. Accommodation occurs when the muscarinic receptors within the ciliary muscle are stimulated by the parasympathetic neurotransmitter, acetylcholine (see Part 1 Optician 29.06.12). The ciliary muscle then contracts, pu...

Using a rabbit model we investigated the role of pigmentation of the ciliary body in obtaining ciliodestruction by neodymium-YAG transscleral cyclophotocoagulation. There was marked destruction of the ciliary body in pigmented rabbit eyes, but no histologic effect was observed in albino rabbit eyes. These findings suggest that pigmentation of the ciliary body is important for obtaining the desi...

We investigate the interaction of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) with their receptors (NPRA, NPRB and NPRC), as well as the proportion and localization of those receptors in the rat ciliary body. Binding assays and affinity cross-linking experiments demonstrated the presence of the NPRC receptor type. However, the three natr...
