The revision of main and alternative banding sequences in chromosome I (AB) have been made for all 14 species of the Chironomus plumosus (Linnaeus, 1758) group. New version of mapping had been suggested for 14 out of 22 banding sequences of arm A. Mapping of 18 banding sequences in arm B have been made for the first time according to Maximova-Shobanov system. Phylogenetic relationships of the b...

The leaves of the carnivorous pitcher plant, Sarracenia purpurea, contain a microscopic aquatic food web that is considered a model system in ecological research. The species identity of the intermediate and top trophic level of this food web, as well the detritivore midge, are highly similar across the native geographic range of S. purpurea and, in some cases, appear to have co-evolved with th...

Predator community composition can alter habitat quality for prey by changing the strength and direction of consumptive effects. Whether predator community composition also alters prey density via nonconsumptive effects during habitat selection is not well known, but is important for understanding how changes to predator communities will alter prey populations. We tested the hypothesis that pre...

Large populations of non-biting midges (Chironomidae) that emerged from waste water stabilization ponds in central Israel created severe nuisance to nearby residents in 1998. A study was begun in summer 1998 to examine the dynamics and phenology of the population as a basis for a successful control strategy. The extensive waste pond area required the development of efficient, reliable and compe...

At a time when anthropogenic activities are increasingly disturbing the overall ecological integrity of freshwater ecosystems, monitoring of biological communities is central to assessing the health and function of streams. This study aimed to use a large nation-wide database to develop a multimetric index (the Korean Benthic macroinvertebrate Index of Biological Integrity—KB-IBI) applica...

The male and female of the new species Metriocnemus puna sp. n from the Argentinean Puna are described and illustrated. A parsimony analysis including 24 well-described species of the genus plus the new species based on the adult male was conducted in order to access the phylogenetic position of the new species and to provide the first phylogenetic hypothesis for the genus.

Polytene chromosomes of chironomid larvae (Diptera: Chironomidae), collected on the Wrangel Island are described. Larvae have 2n=8: AB, CD, EF, G (Ch. thummi Keyl, 1962 complex). By karyotype larvae are identical to Chironomus sp. Le1, described from the Sagystyr Island of the Ust-Lena Reserve (Yakutia) (Kiknadze et al., 1996). The insignificant differences include the number of nucleoli and pu...

Patchy occurrences of benthic drift algae (i.e. loose lying macroalgal mats) may increase habitat complexity on normally bare soft bottoms, but at the same time, extensive amounts of drifting algal mats are known to stress the benthic fauna. This paper presents results of the first detailed study of the fauna associated with drift algal mats in the northern Baltic Sea. In order to assess the im...
