We present the inconsistencies which arise in quenched QCD in ∆I = 1/2 non-leptonic kaon decays using chiral perturbation theory (χPT) to one loop. In particular we discuss how the lack of unitarity of the quenched theory invalidates the usual methods for the extraction of matrix elements from correlation functions.

A fluorous cinchona alkaloid ester has been developed as a chiral promoter for the asymmetric fluorination of β-ketoesters. It has comparable reactivity and selectivity to the nonfluorous versions of cinchona alkaloids and can be easily recovered from the reaction mixture by simple fluorous solid-phase extraction (F-SPE) and used for the next round of reaction without further purification.

A multi-dimensional chromatographic approach was developed to measure the free fractions of drug enantiomers in samples that also contained a binding protein or serum. This method, which combined ultrafast affinity extraction with a chiral stationary phase, was demonstrated using the drug warfarin and the protein human serum albumin.

After a short status report on chiral perturbation theory, I review recent progress in determining some of the low-energy couplings by matching the effective theory to QCD. Consequences for Kl3 decays and for the extraction of the CKM matrix element Vus are reported. Hadronic vacuum polarization at low energies and its impact on the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon are discussed.
