OBJECTIVE Two randomized controlled clinical trials have shown that Lactobacillus (L) reuteri DSM 17938 reduces the duration of diarrhea in children hospitalized due to acute infectious diarrhea. This was the first trial evaluating the efficacy of L. reuteri DSM 17938 in outpatient children with acute infectious diarrhea. METHODS This was a multicenter, randomized, single-blinded, case contro...
BACKGROUND Globally, diarrhea is the second leading cause of death among children under five. In Brazil, mortality due to diarrhea underwent a significant reduction in recent decades principally due to expansion of the primary healthcare network, use of oral rehydration therapy, reduced child undernutrition, and improved access to safe drinking water. The First National Survey of Indigenous Peo...
We evaluated the association between diarrhea, malnutrition and intestinal function using the lactulose-mannitol test. Our study showed that a third of all children have abnormal intestinal permeability, there was an expected increase of permeability in children with acute diarrhea and alteration in intestinal permeability was greater in children with concurrent malnutrition and diarrhea.
Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) was isolated from 11% of 148 Hmong children under 1 year old with diarrhea at a refugee camp in northern Thailand. Of 16 children with EPEC-associated diarrhea, 11 were infected with EPEC that adhered to HeLa cells in a diffuse pattern, 3 were infected with EPEC that adhered to HeLa cells in a localized adherence (LA) pattern, and 2 were infected with EP...
Diarrheal diseases are the most common health problems in developing countries and have an important role in malnutrition of children. Zinc deficiency is usually present in patients with failure to thrive and diarrhea. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a 14-day course of supplemental zinc administration in children with acute watery diarrhea and failure to thrive. ...
Group A rotaviruses are the major cause of diarrhea in young children worldwide. From March 2001 to April 2002, 836 children less than 5 years of age were investigated in Hanoi, Vietnam. This included 587 children with diarrhea and 249 age-matched controls. Group A rotavirus was identified in 46.7% of the children with diarrhea and 3.6% of the controls, which was a significant difference. Withi...
To determine risk factors for diarrhea, the authors followed an open cohort of 1,314 children from Guinea-Bissau by weekly diarrhea recall interviews between April 1987 and March 1990. Data on feeding practices and measles infection were available for all children and, for 531 children, comprehensive data on explanatory variables were recorded. Of 57 variables, seven were independently associat...
Enteroaggregative E. coli (EAggEC) are emerging as an important cause of persistent diarrhea, especially in children in the developing world, yet the pathogenesis of EAggEC infection is poorly understood. In an ongoing prospective study of childhood diarrhea in an urban Brazilian slum, EAggEC are the leading cause of persistent diarrhea. Children from this study with EAggEC and persistent diarr...
