More than 23 000 cattle of both sexes and different ages were examined for blood spots caused by egg-laying females of P. bovicola. Although these studies extended over four years and involved 5 farms in different parts of the Transvaal Bushveld, the overall results were the same. Ovipositional bleeding was strongly seasonal with blood spots first appearing in winter (June), reaching a peak in ...

OBJECTIVES The optimal benefits of antiretroviral therapy (ART) can be compromised by the emergence of HIV drug resistance (HIVDR) resulting in treatment failure. ART was introduced in Papua New Guinea (PNG) in 2004, yet biological data on HIVDR are lacking. The aim of the study was to investigate levels of HIVDR in ART-naive and -experienced patients in PNG. METHODS We recruited, interviewed...

Dried blood spots (DBS) are useful for molecular assays but are prone to false positives from cross-contamination. In our malaria DBS assay, cross-contamination was encountered despite cleaning techniques suitable for HIV-1. We therefore developed a contact-free laser cutting system that effectively eliminated cross-contamination during DBS processing.

The potential importance of DNA methylation in the etiology of complex diseases has led to interest in the development of methylome-wide association studies (MWAS) aimed at interrogating all methylation sites in the human genome. When using blood as biomaterial for a MWAS the DNA is typically extracted directly from fresh or frozen whole blood that was collected via venous puncture. However, DN...

Bullying is a common childhood experience that involves repeated mistreatment to improve or maintain one's status. Victims display long-term social, psychological, and health consequences, whereas bullies display minimal ill effects. The aim of this study is to test how this adverse social experience is biologically embedded to affect short- or long-term levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), a ma...

A commercially available substrate-labelled fluorescent immunoassay procedure has been modified to create a simple rapid method for the determination of capillary phenytoin concentration in dried filter paper blood spots of patients on phenytoin therapy. The specimens are collected and dispatched to the laboratory by the patient, thus domiciliary monitoring of phenytoin therapy can take place. ...

Some scenes of violent crime contain blood stains. Blood spatter stains occur when blood falls passively due to force being applied to a body. There is a well established though extremely tedious technique by which a specially trained forensic technician can analyse the individual blood spots. This procedure estimates the body’s 2D location on the floorplan when the body was impacted. Our image...

We have developed a reversed-phase liquid-chromatographic procedure for simultaneously determining phenylalanine and tyrosine in serum and eluates of dried blood spots. Batch derivatization with phenylisothiocyanate and a 10-min linear gradient chromatographic assay with ultraviolet absorbance detection provide rapid sample throughput. Interrun precision (CV) is less than 12%; analytical recove...

BACKGROUND In sub-Saharan Africa the population prevalence of men who have sex with men (MSM) is unknown, as is the population prevalence of male-on-male sexual violence, and whether male-on-male sexual violence may relate to HIV risk. This paper describes lifetime prevalence of consensual male-male sexual behavior and male-on-male sexual violence (victimization and perpetration) in two South A...
