We report a new potentially dangerous complication of nasal continuous positive airway pressure applied for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. A middle-aged woman had cerebrospinal fluid leak after using nasal CPAP, with generalized seizures and pneumocephalus. She did fine with conservative therapy for the CSF leak and discontinuation of nasal CPAP.
OBJECTIVE To determine the etiology and site of leak of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea and the surgical efficacy of Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS), in closing the defect of CSF leak by different graft materials. STUDY DESIGN Case series. PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY Department of ENT-Head and Neck Surgery, Dow University of Health Sciences, Karachi, from September 2005 to D...
388 August 2014 E blood patch is the mainstay of treatment for persistent symptoms secondary to spontaneous intracranial hypotension.1 Determining the level of cerebrospinal fluid leak is thought to be an important consideration for optimal siting of the epidural blood patch injection.2 However, it is often difficult to determine the level of cerebrospinal fluid leak in spontaneous intracranial...
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is a major part of the central nervous system (CNS) extracellular fluid, and fine regulation of its composition is vital to the brain’s health. Although CSF dynamics has been studied for an entire century, many of its aspects are still insufficiently understood. Today there are two hypotheses (1,2) on CSF physiology: a) traditional hypothesis and b) microcirculatory/mi...
The application of the method of paper electrophoresis to the study of the serum proteins is now well established, but it has rarely been applied to the examination of the proteins of the cerebrospinal fluid (C.S.F.) and not at all to those of the fluids from cerebral cysts. Schneider and Wallenius (1951) have recorded their results in 14 cases, five of which were normal, while more recently Wa...
The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) occupies the brain's ventricles and subarachnoid space and, together with the interstitial fluid (ISF), forms a continuous fluidic network that bathes all cells of the central nervous system (CNS). As such, the CSF is well positioned to actively distribute neuromodulators to neural circuits in vivo via volume transmission. Recent in vitro experimental work in brain...
