CASE DESCRIPTION An 8-year-old boy in southwest Michigan was found to have a tick and target lesion after routine cast care for a first metacarpal fracture. Serological markers were negative for Lyme disease; however, oral doxycycline was prescribed for 3 weeks. Final follow-up did not reveal musculoskeletal or infectious morbidity.

Introduction: Distal forearm fractures are the most common cause for morbidity in otherwise healthy children. There is a wide variety of pediatric fractures. When sufficient force is applied, a complete ‘adult-type’ fracture may occur. By nature, these fractures are very unstable because of disruption of both cortices. Maintaining reduction is key for successful treatment. However, there is no ...

BACKGROUND In adolescents, loss of bone mineral mass usually occurs during phases of reduced physical activity (PA), such as when an injured extremity spends several weeks in a cast. We recorded the PA of adolescents with lower limb fractures during the cast immobilization, at 6 and at 18 months after the fracture, and we compared these values with those of healthy controls. METHODS Fifty ado...

The authors present a case of extensive biopsy proven giant cell tumour of the distal femur in a 27 years-old man revealed by a trauma. He was treated by classic curettage-graft and additional simple cast immobilization instead of internal fixation to prevent the collapse of the fragile affected condyle after curettage. The functional outcome of the knee is satisfactory after one year of follow...

Fractures of the distal radius constitute about 15 % of all fractures treated in emergency department. Closed reduction and cast immobilization has been the mainstay of treatment of these fractures, but invariably it results in malunion, poor functional and cosmetic outcome. This study was conducted to examine the functional outcome of non comminuted extra-articular distal end radius fractures t...

The aim of this study was to examine whether threshold to heat stimuli, and expression of transient receptor potential vanilloid1 (TRPV1) and nerve growth factor (NGF) in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) altered under conditions of long-term limb immobilization. A plastic cast was wrapped around the right limb from the forearm to the forepaw to keep wrist joint at 90° of flexion for 5 weeks. Heat hyp...
