A C(4)-bound palladium-N-heterocyclic carbene (4) was selectively obtained from the C(2)-unsubstituted imidazolium salt 3. The higher stability of the C(4) versus the C(2)-bound carbene complex due to pyridine chelation assistance allowed this mesoionic compound to be obtained.

Mechanistic analysis of the reaction between elemental sulfur or selenium and 1,3-dialkylimidazolium acetate ionic liquids, in the absence of an external base or solvent, affords evidence for the equilibrium presence of carbene species in these ionic liquids. It demonstrates the potential to control, through anion selection, the concentration of carbene in stable ionic liquids.

An electrochemical approach for the preparation of copper(I) N-heterocyclic carbene complexes has been developed to include a diverse range of ligand precursors. Importantly, the method is effective for a ligand precursor that contains several acidic protons and for which traditional methods of carbene formation are not suitable.
