Sir—We read with interest the recent article " Should Vascular Catheters Be Removed from All Patients with Candide-mia? An Evidence-Based Review " by Nucci and Anaissie [1], who attempt to clarify a controversial issue related to the clinical management of this infection. As the authors of a study [2] cited in their article, we were surprised by the interpretation of some of our data, and we wo...
If there is to be a problem of evil, there must be some ethical requirement which is applicable to divine action, and which arguably is not met in the actual world. Once such a requirement has been identified, it becomes the task of the theodicist to argue either that the proposed requirement does not hold, or that the requirement is in fact met. One of the most popular candidates for this role...
In the course of four evaluations in the Advanced Research Projects Agency Machine Translation series, evaluation methods have evolved for measuring the core components of a diverse set of systems. This paper describes the methodologies in terms of the most recent evaluation of research and production MT systems, and discusses indications of ways to improve the focus and portability of the eval...
Harold L. SOMERS Centre for Computational Linguistics UMIST, PO Box 88, Manchester M60 1QD, England [email protected] 1. Background In 1988, at the Second TMI conference at Carnegie Mellon University, IBM’s Peter Brown shocked the audience by presenting an approach to Machine Translation (MT) which was quite unlike anything that most of the audience had ever seen or even dreamed of before....
over, and what kinds of symbol systems should we create for them? Everytime a new phenomenon is identified as a bottleneck or as problematic, the very actsof describing the phenomenon, defining it,and creating a set of symbols to represent its abstractions are symbolic (in both senses of the word!). The benefits: decreasedlearning time and more powerful rules, hence improved ...
In the second year of evaluations of the ARPA HLT Machine Translation (MT) Initiative, methodologies developed and tested in 1992 were applied to the 1993 MT test runs. The current methodology optimizes the inherently subjective judgments on translation accuracy and quality by channeling the judgments of non-translators into many data points which reflect both the comparison of the performance ...
This paper describes the work in progress on application of Intex to text alignment. Lexical resources incorporated in Intex and local grammars are used to identify those elements in translated text that usually represent literal translations of the original. The motivation for the experiment and basic ideas of the algorithm are illustarted. 1. The motivation for the production of aligned resou...
Two landmark studies of cell signaling, by RNA interference and phosphoproteomics, provide complementary global views of the pathways downstream of receptor kinases, including those regulated by Erks. Published: 1 February 2007 Genome Biology 2007, 8:202 (doi:10.1186/gb-2007-8-1-202) The electronic version of this article is the complete one and can be found online at http://genomebiology.com/2...
We report the results of an experiment on automatic NE recognition from Machine Translations produced by five different MT systems. NE annotations are compared with the results obtained from two highquality human translations. The experiment shows that for recognition of a large class of NEs (Person Names, Locations, Dates, etc.) MT output is almost as useful as a human translation. For other t...
