The implementation of a nationwide lockdown to curb the spread COVID-19 disease has reduced loading anthropogenic aerosols. However, AOD distribution over South Asia during period shows dipole pattern: reduction North Indian and enhancement Myanmar region. This pattern is evident in some datasets (MODIS, MERRA, CALIPSO). MODIS fire counts collocated with CALIPSO smoke aerosols show indicating c...

The Cloud-Aerosol LIdar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) is the primary instrument on the CALIPSO satellite, which is scheduled to launch in 2005. CALIOP will provide profiles of total backscatter at two wavelengths, from which aerosol and cloud profiles will be derived. The instrument also measures the linear depolarization of the backscattered return, allowing discrimination of cloud pha...

Aerosol extinction profiles are derived from backscatter data by constraining the retrieval with column aerosol optical thickness (AOT), for example from coincident MODIS observations and without reliance on a priori assumptions about aerosol type or optical properties. The backscatter data were acquired with the NASA Langley High Spectral Resolution Lidar (HSRL). The HSRL also simultaneously m...

This manuscript compares statistics of the CALIPSO derived aerosol optical depth (AOD) above low level clouds to that in cloud free scenes. Results are presented for both daytime and nighttime retrievals of AOD. The work illustrates that there are some differences in the AOD above low cloud and the AOD in clear skies in the daytime retrievals e.g. over the southeast Atlantic in SON. These are h...
