BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The associations of breastfeeding and early childhood caries (ECC) risk have been evaluated in several epidemiological studies with conflicting results. We performed an update meta-analysis to estimate the association of feeding patterns, breastfeeding durations and ECC risk. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN Studies were identified through searching Pubmed, Web of Science, a...
BACKGROUND The implications of the biologically active elements in breast milk for the breastfed infant are largely unknown. Animal models suggest that ingestion of glucocorticoids during the neonatal period influences fear behavior and modifies brain development. AIMS To determine the association between postnatal maternal cortisol levels and temperament in breastfed infants. STUDY DESIGN ...
Results of studies of breastfeeding and postmenopausal breast cancer risk have been inconsistent, with many investigators concluding that breastfeeding does not influence risk. We examined whether breastfeeding reduces postmenopausal breast cancer risk as well as the details of this relationship, including possible modification in risk by the age that a woman first breastfed a child and the num...
OBJECTIVE To assess impact of probiotics and breastfeeding on gut microecology. STUDY DESIGN Mothers were randomized to receive placebo or Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG before delivery, with treatment of the infants after delivery. We assessed gut microbiota, humoral immune responses, and measured soluble cluster of differentiation 14 (sCD14) in colostrum in 96 infants. RESULTS Fecal Bifidobac...
OBJECTIVES This study was conducted to assess whether formula-fed infants had increased skin advanced glycation end-products compared with breastfed ones. We also evaluated the effect of maternal smoke during pregnancy and lactation on infant skin advanced glycation end-products accumulation. METHODS Advanced glycation end-product-linked skin autofluorescence was measured in 101 infants. RE...
OBJECTIVE To investigate the dose-response relationship between breastfeeding duration and cognitive development in French preschool children. STUDY DESIGN In the French EDEN Mother-Child Cohort Study, we evaluated language ability with the Communicative Development Inventory (CDI) in 1387 2-year-old children and overall development with the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) in 1199 3-year-...
During 2001, neurologic impairment resulting from cobalamin (vitamin B12) deficiency was diagnosed in two children in Georgia. The children were breastfed by mothers who followed vegetarian diets. This report summarizes the two cases and provides guidance for health-care providers on identifying and preventing cobalamin deficiency among breastfed infants of vegetarian mothers.
Background: Breastfeeding has many short-term and long-term health benefits for infants. Short-term include protection against childhood infections mortality in low-income countries. The adult effects usually emphasized are a reduction of excess weight type 2 diabetes. However, there is lack available data on the impact having been breastfed fertility. Indeed, infertility probably multifactoria...
Severe acute malnutrition (SAM) is treated with ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTF) containing a vitamin–mineral premix. Yet little known about micronutrient status in children SAM before and after treatment. We aimed to investigate vitamin B12 uncomplicated SAM, aged 6–59 months Burkina Faso, treatment standard or reduced dose of RUTF. Blood samples were collected at admission discharge. Ser...
