We present previously unpublished elementary proofs by Dekker and Ottens (1991) and Boyce (private communication) of a special case of the Dinitz conjecture. We prove a special case of a related basis conjecture by Rota, and give a reformulation of Rota's conjecture using the Nullstellensatz. Finally we give an asymptotic result on a related Latin square conjecture.

In this paper, based on equivalence classes of attributes there are formulated necessary and sufficient conditions that constraint a database schema to be in the second, third or Boyce-Codd normal forms. These conditions offer a polynomial complexity for the testing algorithms of the normalizations level.

A deductive system for automated database normalization is implemented by using a HiLog reasoning engine. The system allows for checking a relational schema up to Boyce-Codd normal form (BCNF) and functional independency normal form (FINF). Examples of system usage are presented and discussed.
