The synthesis, characterization, and spectral properties of strategically designed boronic acid containing fluorescent sensors, o-, m-, p-BMOQBA, for the potential detection of tear glucose concentrations when immobilized in plastic disposable contact lenses is described. The new probes, BMOQBAs, consist of the 6-methoxyquinolinium nucleus as a fluorescent indicator, and the boronic acid moiety...

Because the boronic acid moiety reversibly binds to sugar molecules and has low cytotoxicity, boronic acid-containing hydrogels are being used in a variety of implantable glucose sensors under development, including sensors based on optical, fluorescence, and swelling pressure measurements. However, some method of glucose selectivity enhancement is often necessary, because isolated boronic acid...

Penicillin binding proteins (PBPs) catalyze steps in the biosynthesis of bacterial cell walls and are the targets for the beta-lactam antibiotics. Non-beta-lactam based antibiotics that target PBPs are of interest because bacteria have evolved resistance to the beta-lactam antibiotics. Boronic acids have been developed as inhibitors of the mechanistically related serine beta-lactamases and seri...

Copper(II)-catalyzed boronic acid promoted C-N bond cross-coupling reactions have been successfully developed for sequential N-arylation of C-amino-NH-azoles. These general protocols are compatible with a variety of aryl/hetero-aryl boronic acids and provided rapid access to a diverse array of diarylaminoazole derivatives in a two-step sequence or in one-pot.

We characterize a new water soluble fluorescent probe sensitive to changes in pH. The new probe shows spectral shifts and intensity changes in different pH media, in a wavelength ratiometric and colorimetric manner. Subsequently, changes in pH can readily be determined around the physiological level. The new probe’s response is based on the ability of the boronic acid group to interact with str...

Two classes of addition/cycloaddition cascade reactions of hydrazinecarbodithioate (1) have been developed under mild reaction conditions. Reaction of hydrazinecarbodithioate (1) with formaldehyde solution (2) and propiolic acid (3) gives 3-propargyl-5-thiol-2,3-dihydro-1,3,4-thiadiazoles (5) via a decarboxylative coupling/cycloaddition domino sequence. When propiolic acid (3) is switched to ph...

Not a 'B'ore! Benzothiophene-based boronic acids catalyze the reduction of tertiary, secondary, and primary amides in the presence of a hydrosilane. The reaction demonstrates good functional-group tolerance.

High throughput screening of a 4096 compound library of boronic acid and acridine containing branched peptides revealed compounds that have dissociation constants in the low nanomolar regime for HIV-1 RRE IIB RNA. We demonstrate that branched peptide boronic acids A5, A6, and A7 inhibit the production of p24, an HIV-1 capsid protein, in a dose-dependent manner.

Bacteria express beta-lactamases to counteract the beneficial action of antibiotics. Benzo[b]-thiophene-2-boronic acid (BZB) derivatives are β-lactamase inhibitors and, as such, promising compounds to be associated with β-lactam antibacterial therapies. The uncharged form of BZB, in particular, is suggested to diffuse through the outer membrane of gram negative bacteria. In this study, through ...

We are developing photonic crystal glucose sensing materials to continuously monitor relatively high glucose concentrations, such as found in blood. We modified our synthetic fabrication methodologies in order to increase the glucose concentration range and to increase the reproducibility of our PCCA fabrication. We have also advanced our understanding of the sensing response by developing a me...
