Blunt thoracic trauma may result in cardiac injuries ranging from simple arrhythmias to fatal cardiac rupture. Coronary artery dissection culminating in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is rare after blunt chest trauma. Here we report a case of a 37-year-old man who had an AMI secondary to coronary dissection resulting from blunt chest trauma after involvement in a physical fight.
PURPOSE We aimed to present the frequency of computed tomography (CT) signs of diaphragmatic rupture and the differences between blunt and penetrating trauma. MATERIALS AND METHODS The CT scans of 23 patients with surgically proven diaphragmatic tears (both blunt and penetrating) were retrospectively reviewed for previously described CT signs of diaphragmatic injuries. The overall frequency o...
INTRODUCTION The difficulties in the management of the blunt chest wall trauma patient in the Emergency Department due to the development of late complications are well recognised in the literature. Pre-injury anti-platelet therapy has been previously investigated as a risk factor for poor outcomes following traumatic head injury, but not in the blunt chest wall trauma patient cohort. The aim o...
BACKGROUND Blunt chest trauma is second leading cause of death among trauma patients. Early identification and aggressive management of blunt thoracic trauma is essential to reduce the significant rates of morbidity and mortality. Thoracic trauma severity score (TTS) is a better predictor of chest trauma related complications. The objective of the study was to compare outcomes between low-and h...
BACKGROUND After severe blunt chest trauma, the development of an acute lung injury (ALI) is often associated with severe or even lethal complications. Especially in multiple injured patients after blunt chest trauma ALI/ARDS [acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)] is frequent. However, in the initial posttraumatic phase, inflammatory clinical signs are often not apparent and underlying ch...
Oesophageal perforation following blunt trauma is rare and accounts for less than 10% of all oesophageal ruptures. Review of published reports revealed only two cases of isolated oesophageal perforation after minor blunt trauma, and these were as a direct result of the Heimlich manoeuvre. This paper describes a case of perforation of the oesophagus as an isolated injury following blunt minor tr...
Blunt abdominal trauma is a rare case of intestinal obstruction, and only few cases have been reported in the world literature. Stenotic intestinal obstruction following blunt abdominal trauma is a very rare complication. This case highlights the need for clinical suspicion serial clinical assessment and radiological evaluation and the need for early surgery in patients presenting with abdomina...
