Six Haemophilus influenzae strains could not be classified as biotypes I through VII. The strains were indole, urease, and ornithine decarboxylase negative. We propose that they be classified as biotype VIII, a previously unreported biotype.

To the Editor: The traditional causative agent of cholera, Vibrio chol-erae O1, has 2 biotypes, classical and El Tor. The current seventh pandemic that began in 1961 and has spread to much of the world is caused by the El Tor biotype. This biotype has replaced the classical biotype responsible for the previous pandemics. The classical and El Tor biotypes are differentiated by phenotypic tests (...

In 1996 a common-source outbreak of severe soft tissue and bloodstream infections erupted among Israeli fish farmers and fish consumers due to changes in fish marketing policies. The causative pathogen was a new strain of Vibrio vulnificus, named biotype 3, which displayed a unique biochemical and genotypic profile. Initial observations suggested that the pathogen erupted as a result of genetic...

Greenhouse and laboratory studies were conducted to confirm and quantify glyphosate resistance, quantify pyrithiobac resistance, and investigate interaction between flumiclorac and glyphosate mixtures on control of Palmer amaranth from Mississippi. The GR50 (herbicide dose required to cause a 50% reduction in plant growth) values for two glyphosateresistant biotypes, C1B1 and T4B1, and a glypho...

Vibrio cholerae O1 biotype El Tor (ET), the cause of the current 7th pandemic, has recently been replaced in Asia and Africa by an altered ET biotype possessing cholera toxin (CTX) of the classical (CL) biotype that originally caused the first six pandemics before becoming extinct in the 1980s. Until recently, the ET prototype was the biotype circulating in Peru; a detailed understanding of the...

A total of 101 Campylobacter isolates from Nigerian children with or without gastroenteritis were biotyped and serogrouped by using the Lior typing schemes (H. Lior, J. Clin. Microbiol. 20:636-640, 1984; H. Lior, D. L. Woodward, J. A. Edgar, L. J. Laroche, and P. Gill, J. Clin. Microbiol. 15:761-768, 1982). Fifty-three (52.5%) of the isolates were Campylobacter jejuni biotype I, 29 (28.7%) were...

Gingival biotype is described as the thickness of gingiva in faciopalatal or faciolingual dimension. Aesthetic highly con-sidered anterior teeth. A 35-year-old woman came with a complaint that color her front teeth was slightly dark after root canal treatment 10 years ago. Clinical and radiographic examinations upper left lateral incisor showed no signs inflammation infection. Biotype evaluatio...

We used the scheme of Lior to biotype 140 genetically identified Campylobacter strains. Our results confirmed previous studies and extended Lior biotyping to show that nine C. jejuni subsp. doylei strains (100%) were one biotype and nine C. jejuni subsp. jejuni nalidixic acid-resistant strains (100%) were C. jejuni biotype I or II. All C. jejuni subsp. jejuni hippurate-negative strains studied ...

One hundred and eighty eight isolates of Haemophilus influenzae and 187 isolates of H parainfluenzae from patients with cystic fibrosis, patients with respiratory infections but without cystic fibrosis, and patients with neither cystic fibrosis nor respiratory infections were biotyped. Biotype I of H influenzae were found significantly more often in patients with cystic fibrosis compared with t...
