A total of twenty-two strict anaerobic and Gram-positive Bifidobacteria, identified as B. adolescentis, B.pseudocatenulatum, or B. longum, were isolated from healthy adult Koreans. We here investigated the cellmorphology, antimicrobial resistance patterns to novel antibiotics and genotypic differentiation ofBifidobacteria assessing repetitive DNA element PCR (rep-PCR) fingerpr...

BACKGROUND/AIMS We investigated gut flora characteristics in patients with functional constipation (FC) and influences of short-term treatment with VSL#3 probiotic on flora and symptom improvement. METHODS Thirty patients fulfilling Rome III criteria for FC and 30 controls were enrolled. Fecal samples were obtained before and after VSL#3 intake (one sachet twice daily for 2 weeks) and flora w...

Bifidobacterium spp. typical of the human intestinal microbiota are believed to influence the balance of immune responses in the intestinal mucosa. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of different bifidobacterial species and their mixtures in in vitro experiments with peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and Caco-2 cells. Bifidobacterium adolescentis, B. angulatum, B...

probiotics are live microbial feed supplement and can provide health benefit to the host if administered in sufficient amounts. the most predominant species that have been used as probiotic include lactobacilli and bifidobacteria. proper administration of probiotics could be efficient in the treatment of various disorders. however; their mechanism of action is poorly understood. the effects of ...

BACKGROUND The connection between gut microbiota and metabolism and its role in the pathogenesis of diabetes are increasingly recognized. The objective of this study was to quantitatively measure Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species, members of commensal bacteria found in human gut, in type 2 diabetic patients (T2D) patients from Southern China. METHODS Fifty patients with T2D and thirty...

Bifidobacterium sp. are anaerobic, Gram-positive, short, irregular rods with rudimentary branching. These organisms are reported to be associated with health benefits and their significance as a pathogen is not much reported. We are reporting two cases of mixed pyogenic infections due to Bifidobacterium sp. In the first patient, the infection mimicked tubercular bone infection. The second patie...

The intestinal microbiome might be an important contributor to the development of type 2 diabetes. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that oral administration of Bifidobacterium species (spp.) (including B. longum, B. bifidum, B. infantis, and B. animalis) may both ameliorate insulin resistance and reduce the expressions of inflammatory adipocytokines. Male Swiss-Webster mice fed a ...

The composition and metabolic activities of the human colonic microbiota are modulated by a number of external factors, including diet and antibiotic therapy. Changes in the structure and metabolism of the gut microbiota may have long-term consequences for host health. The large intestine harbors a complex microbial ecosystem comprising several hundreds of different bacterial species, which com...

Phytase activity has been detected for the first time in Bifidobacterium spp. These bacteria were able to dephosphorylate phytic acid (myo-inositol hexaphosphate, IP(6)) and generate several myo-inositol phosphate intermediates (IP(3)-IP(5)). B. globosum and B. pseudocatenulatum were optimally active at neutral-alkaline pH and B. adolescentis, B. angulatum and B. longum at acid pH. B. pseudocat...

We have investigated the occurrence of bifidobacteria in human milk samples, and we provide evidence regarding the predominance of members of the Bifidobacterium breve species in this environment. Moreover, evaluation of the growth capabilities and transcriptomic analyses of one representative isolate of this species, i.e., B. breve 4L, on different milk types were performed.
