The hydroalcoholic extracts of dried ligulate florets of Calendula officinalis L., dried leaves of Plantago major L., and dried aerial parts of Vinca major L. were prepared and used as the main active ingredients of two types of anti-anorectal disease ointments and suppositories. Benzocaine was used in one of the formulations, while a mixture of belladonna dry extract and ephedrine sulfate ...

BACKGROUND The potentially life-threatening condition of methemoglobinemia is characterized by cyanosis, low pulse oximetric readings, and normal arterial Po(2) values. Acquired methemoglobinemia has been linked to the use of the topical anesthetic benzocaine in endoscopic procedures, including transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). Yet, the incidence of benzocaine-induced methemoglobinemia wi...

We examined the ability of local anesthetics to correct altered inactivation properties of rat skeletal muscle Na+channels containing the equine hyperkalemic periodic paralysis (eqHPP) mutation when expressed in Xenopusoocytes. Increased time constants of current decay in eqHPP channels compared with wild-type channels were restored by 1 mM benzocaine but were not altered by lidocaine or mexile...

BACKGROUND Local anesthetics inhibit lipid mediator signaling (lysophosphatidate, thromboxane) by acting on intracellular domains of the receptor or on the G protein. On receptors for polar agonists, the ligand-binding pocket could form an additional site of interaction, possibly resulting in superadditive inhibition. The authors therefore investigated the effects of local anesthetics on m1 mus...

Two killing methods were compared on the clupeid, bony bream Nematolosa erebi and it was found that ice-slurry immersion was more humane than benzocaine overdose. The use of ice-slurry for killing N. erebi should be accepted as a standard humane method and considered similarly for other warm-water species.
