A case of basilar artery occlusion in a 16-year-old-girl has been reported. Reports of 20 such cases occurring in children have been reviewed. In children, basilar artery occlusion is more common in males; no previous case above the age of 3 years has been reported in females. There were preceding TIA's and RIND in the vertebro-basilar territory.

CONTEXT The microsurgical anatomy of the posterior circulation is very complex and variable. Surgical approaches to this area are considered risky due to the presence of the various important blood vessels and neural structures. AIMS To document the microsurgical anatomy of the posterior circulation along with variations in the Indian population. MATERIALS AND METHODS The authors studied 25...

The Effect of Isordil and Cyclospasmol on Vascular Spasm Induced in the Basilar Artery of the Cat • Vasospasm of the basilar artery of the cat was induced by subarachnoid bleeding and was observed by a transoral approach to the vessel. Intravenous Isordil (2 to 4 mg/kg) given following vasospasm produced vasodilatation with minimal arterial hypotension. Cyclospasmol, administered intravenously ...

Basilar artery occlusion remains a challenging pathological process. Time delay between presentation and diagnosis and treatment can be associated with poor outcome, but the low frequency and variable presentation in BAO makes rapid diagnosis difficult. Clinicians should maintain an index of suspicion for basilar artery occlusion in patients of any age who present with focal neurological sympto...

An isometric tension measurement of ring segments was performed in the rabbit basilar and common carotid arteries in vitro to investigate the regional differences in the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-induced vasodilation and the effect of subarachnoid hemorrhage on CGRP-induced vasodilation. CGRP elicited vasodilation of the rabbit basilar artery in a dose-dependent fashion when the ar...

In a case in which the patient became totally paralysed except for blinking and vertical eye movements, microscopic serial sections of the pons showed bilateral infarcts which were due to occlusion of two small basilar branch arteries, one on each side. One basilar branch was occluded by an atheroma lying at its junction with the basilar artery and the other by an intramural dissection within t...

AIM Cerebral vasospasm is the primary cause of morbidity and mortality after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Hydrogen Sulfide (H < sub > 2 < /sub > S), a gaseous neurotransmitter, is produced in many tissues including the central nervous system (CNS). The vasodilatatory effect of H2S has been shown in the CNS; however, its role in cerebral vasospasm has not been investigated before. MATERIAL A...

Symptomatic basilar artery stenosis has a poor prognosis. Surgical bypasses are technically demanding and of no proven benefit. A new generation of intravascular stents that are flexible enough to navigate the tortuosities of the vertebral artery may provide a new therapeutic approach. Our two cases, 57 and 52 year-old men experienced a vertebrobasilar ischemia with repeated vertigo and falls. ...

The neuropathological findings at necropsy are described in three cases of basilar artery injuries and their consequences after head trauma and the mechanism of injuries is discussed. The first case was that of massive pontine infarct due to an occlusion of the basilar artery trapped in the fracture of the clivus, 13 days before death. The second case, also with a pontine infarct, survived for ...
