Fifteen isolates of Bacillus species were recovered during a 19-day period after the introduction of an automated radiometric blood culture system. The outbreak was traced to alcohol-resistant spores present in the cotton used to disinfect blood culture bottles. The role of Bacillus species as a pathogen and a laboratory contaminant is discussed.
Bacillus strains were isolated from the rhizosphere of cereals in order to be used as natural biocontrol agents (BCAs). They were screened for antagonism in vitro against various test micro-organisms. The isolates showing antagonism were identified to species level. A combination of techniques was employed for the isolation of Bacillus species. Using the direct method, only one of the 25 isolat...
We report the isolation, cloning and expression, in Bacillus subtilis, of the gene coding for thermolysin, a thermostable metalloprotease which is produced by Bacillus thermoproteolyticus Rokko. The nucleotide sequence has revealed that, like neutral proteases produced by other members of the Bacillus species, thermolysin is probably produced as a preproenzyme carrying a typical N-terminal memb...
The Bacillus cereus group bacteriophage TsarBomba, a double-stranded DNA Myoviridae, was isolated from soil collected in Saratov, Russia. TsarBomba was found to be similar to Bacillus phages BCP78 and BCU4, and to have a wide host range among Bacillus cereus group species.
Gram positive aerobic or facultatively anaerobic spore forming gram positive bacilli were first identified by Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg in 1885 and were later classified by Ferdinand Cohn in to a separate genus Bacillus [1]. Aerobic spore forming gram positive bacteria are commonly referred to as ASB’s and includes members of Bacillus spp which are basically saprophytes living as thermophil...
Three species of Bacillus were evaluated as potential surrogates for Bacillus anthracis for determining the sporicidal activity of chlorination as commonly used in drinking water treatment. Spores of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis were found to be an appropriate surrogate for spores of B. anthracis for use in chlorine inactivation studies.
Label-free bacterial colony phenotyping technology called BARDOT (Bacterial Rapid Detection using Optical scattering Technology) provided successful classification of several different bacteria at the genus, species, and serovar level. Recent experiments with colonies of Bacillus species provided strikingly different characteristics of elastic light scatter (ELS) patterns, which were comprised ...
