The phenomenon of lysogenicity is an interesting aspect of the bacteriumbacteriophage relationship, for this is an instance of host cells capable of carrying virus through an infinite succession of subcultures, even through cycles of sporulation (den Dooren de Jong, 1930, 1932). Unlike other bacterium-bacteriophage systems, infection of the host does not inevitably terminate in its destruction;...

In order to examine radiation-induced proteins in an extremely radio-resistant bacterium, it became possibleto perform comparative proteomic analysis on radio-resistance Bacillus megaterium WHO as a wildtypestrain for the first time. Variation in cellular proteins profiles of the Bacillus megaterium WHO after 5KGy γ-irradiation were analyzed by two-dimensional poly acryl amide...

Primaquine inhibited polyphenylalanine formation directed by poly(U) in a cell-free system obtained from Bacillus megaterium only when the drug was preincubated with transfer ribonucleic acid (tRNA), poly(U), or ribosomes. Considerably less inhibition was produced when the ionic strength of the preincubation mixture of tRNA or poly(U) plus primaquine was increased; with ribosomes, the extent of...

Proteins required for the synthesis of peptidoglycan and incorporation of diaminopimelic acid into cell walls have been solubilized from Bacillus megaterium toluene-treated cells. Some of these proteins might have been removed from the cytoplasmic membrane through the cell wall by extraction with LiCl. The solubilized proteins have molecular weights in the range of 40,000 to 70,000 and can be a...

BACKGROUND Some novel substituted pyrazolone, pyrazolo[3,4-c]pyridazine, pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine, pyrazolo[3,4-d]thiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidinone, thieno[3,2-c]pyrazole and pyrazolo[3',4':4,5]thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidine derivatives have been reported to possess various pharmacological activities like antimicrobial, antitumor and anti-inflammatory. RESULTS A novel series of azoles and azines were des...

We report a 40-year-old female patient who was admitted to the hospital because of a left ovarian mass torsion. A nonhemolytic, nonmotile Bacillus, suspicious of Bacillus anthracis, was isolated from a blood culture. We discuss the evaluation that led to the final identification of the bacterium as B. megaterium.

Superdormant spores of Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus megaterium were isolated in 4 to 12% yields following germination with high nutrient levels that activated one or two germinant receptors. These superdormant spores did not germinate with the initial nutrients or those that stimulated other germinant receptors, and the superdormant spores' defect was not genetic. The superdormant spores did,...
