Artificial bone (PC, containing 3% indomethacin) with biocompatibility, inter-connective pore structure, and drug delivery ability was obtained from self-setting apatite/collagen composite cement. X-ray powder diffraction and FT-IR spectroscopy suggested that PC consisted of carbonated apatite and had a structure similar to that of natural rat bone. The IMC release rates from a PC block contain...

We studied the flow and physical properties of hydraulic body fluid spiders. Our results suggest that this fluid, which drives leg extension, is shear-thinning. This interesting characteristic could inspire systems for soft-robotics.

1. Artificial heart valves have been in use for over five decades to replace diseased heart valves. Since the first heart valve replacement performed with a caged-ball valve, more than 50 valve designs have been developed, differing principally in valve geometry, number of leaflets and material. To date, all artificial heart valves are plagued with complications associated with haemolysis, coag...

The correspondence problem is an important problem when the subjects have two different kinematical structures imitating each other. In this new approach, the imitator and the imitate have totally different dynamics systems, the first one is the fluidic system, the second one is the human hand gestures. The motion of the fluidic system is composed of the combination of fluid particles which are...

Artificial muscles hold promise for safe and powerful actuation for myriad common machines and robots. However, the design, fabrication, and implementation of artificial muscles are often limited by their material costs, operating principle, scalability, and single-degree-of-freedom contractile actuation motions. Here we propose an architecture for fluid-driven origami-inspired artificial muscl...

41 Metallic materials are used in biomedical devices for various parts of the human body (Fig. 1). The implanted material is exposed to body fluids, such as intercellular fluid and blood depending on the surrounding tissue. Body fluid consists of inorganic ions (Na+, Cl-, Ca2+, HxPO4 etc.), amino acids, proteins, and organic acids. The pH of body fluid is buffered at 7.15~7.35 but it decreases ...

In this work a finite element simulation of the motion of a rigid body in a fluid, with free surface, is described. A completely general referential description (of which both Lagrangian and Eulerian descriptions are special cases) of an incompressible, Newtonian fluid is used. Such a description enables a distorting finite element mesh to be used for the deforming fluid domain. A new scheme fo...
