OBJECTIVES Analyse a series of halogenated 3-deaza-adenosine analogues for efficacy against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Ra and determine if adenosine (Ado) kinase plays a role in the mechanism of action of these compounds. METHODS The MIC as determined by microdilution broth assay provided a measure of antitubercular efficacy. MIC values were measured in M. tuberculosis strains H37Ra, SRICK...
The Revised National Tuberculosis Control Program (RNTCP) has initiated provision of antitubercular therapy for children with strategy of patient-wise boxes for the 4 different weight bands (6- 10 kg; 11- 17 kg; 18- 25 kg; 26- 30 kg). We evaluated the dose of individual drugs delivered by this approach to children of varying weights. The following areas of concern were identified: underdosing o...
Infectious diseases pose a potential threat and are responsible for killing more people globally than any other single cause. For six decades, antibiotics have been a bulwark against bacterial infectious diseases. This bulwark is failing due to the appearance of resistant bacterial strains. The biosynthesis pathway of fatty acids in bacteria represents a validated target for antibacterial drug ...
A series of 2-amino-4H-pyran-3-carbonitrile derivatives were designed and synthesized. Their antitubercular activities were evaluated against autoluminescent M. tuberculosis H37Ra and standard strain M. tuberculosis H37Rv. No obvious antitubercular activities could be observed (MIC > 10 g/mL). The results are in sharp contrast with the previously reported data.
Tuberculosis is a contagious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. After a long period during which this disease seemed to be declining, the last two decades have seen an unexpected return recorded (Raviglione et al., 1995). Isoniazid, pyraziniamide, ethambutol, rifampicin and streptomycin, generally used in combination, are still the current drugs of choice in the therapy of tuberculos...
