Nasopharyngeal (NP) pneumococcal carriage predisposes children to pneumococcal infections. Defining the proportion of pneumococcal isolates that are antibiotic-resistant enables the appropriate choice of empiric therapies. The antibiogram of NP carriage isolates derived from a pediatric population following the introduction of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine was defined in this study.

Laboratory technologists (22%) developed infections with Shigella sonnei. The isolates had the same antibiogram and pulse-field gel electrophoresis pattern as an unknown isolate handled by a laboratory student. Covering faucet handles with paper towels during hand washing in the laboratory was protective. No further cases occurred after the laboratory was cleaned with a phenolic agent and a han...

To the Editor—We read with interest the report by Mizuta and colleagues on the role of a combination antibiogram for empirical treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection. The emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) gramnegative microorganisms, especially Acinetobacter baumannii, has created prescribing dilemmas for physicians trying to select empirical therapy. In Thailand, the national incid...

AIM The present study was investigated to ascertain the epidemiological status of fowl typhoid (FT) in broilers in some parts of Haryana during January 2011 to December 2013. MATERIALS AND METHODS To elucidate the epidemiological status of FT in broiler chickens for the 3 years (2011-2013) and to study the prevalence of various Salmonella serovars in poultry on the basis of culture characteri...

If isolates are speciated and if a sufficient range of antibiotics is tested, underlying resistance mechanisms can often be inferred from the antibiogram data. This allows: (i) anomalous combinations of phenotype and organism to be reconsidered; (ii) prediction of further antibiotics that deserve testing; and (iii) the suppression of susceptibilities that are anomalous in the light of the infer...

Salmonella enterica strains isolated in Okinawa between 1995 and 2005 were analyzed with respect to their serovars and antimicrobial susceptibility, and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was used to examine their digestion patterns. A total of 1,071 isolates, including 610 from humans, 358 from animal rectal swabs and 103 from meat obtained at grocery stores, were examined. The first 3 mo...

Detection of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae in the laboratory requires an exhaustive analysis of the antibiogram and susceptibility to all beta-lactams, the implementation with phenotypic methods of screening as well as confirmatory procedures including the detection of the carbapenem hydrolysis, the inhibition of the enzyme activity with several specific inhibitor compounds and by ...

Multiple morphotypes of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from 50 respiratory specimens of cystic fibrosis patients were tested for correlation of broth microdilution susceptibility results of a mixed-morphotype inoculum with a predicted antibiogram of the individual isolates. The overall correlation was 96.0%, with only 1.6% very major or major errors.

Streptococcus salivarius is a prominent member of the oral microbiota and has excellent potential for use as a probiotic targeting the oral cavity. In this report we document safety data relating to S. salivarius K12, including assessment of its antibiogram, metabolic profiles, and virulence determinants, and we examine the microbial composition of saliva following the dosing of subjects with K12.

During 2004 and 2005, cholera was recorded in 15 states of India, with 7 outbreaks. The newly emerged Vibrio cholerae O1 Inaba had a different antibiogram and ribotype, different pulsotypes, and different mutations in the wbeT gene. Due to the absence of serogroup O139, the Inaba serotype may have acquired the potential to affect the population at large.
